Superman’s Best Character Is Not Returning Any Time Soon, Reveals Star

Attention: The following may contain spoilers for Superman: In the recently released Superman movie, James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe got underway with a bang. A new Justice League-like group was swiftly introduced, known as the “Justice Gang.” This secret team of superheroes is financed by billionaire Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn) and features Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi). Although all three characters are significant in Superman, their future roles within the DCU appear to be diverging. Notably, both Hawkgirl and Guy Gardner will reappear in Season 2 of Peacemaker, with Gardner also starring in HBO’s upcoming Lanterns series. Regrettably, as Gathegi shared with Variety, Mister Terrific won’t be making an appearance in the DCU anytime in the near future, and he hasn’t been asked to participate in any projects as of yet.

Gathegi clarified that while he knows about his multi-project agreement, the details remain unclear to him. Essentially, James emphasized they won’t start production without polished scripts, so whatever plans exist for his characters doesn’t matter until a draft is ready and producible. In other words, Gathegi is cautious not to get too excited before things are confirmed. He hopes to play a significant role in this universe, but whether that happens or not depends on factors like time, trust, and the efforts of others.

In the final installment of Superman, the Justice League continues to function, setting them up for future appearances. This is already the case for Guy Gardner who has been confirmed to reappear in Lanterns, sharing screen time with new Green Lanterns Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). However, when asked about his involvement in the series, actor Masi Oka (who plays Mister Terrific) made it clear that he will not be returning. This leaves the exact timing of Mister Terrific’s next appearance still unknown.

The Justice Gang (Minus Mister Terrific) Is Also Coming to Peacemaker

In light of my own excitement for the upcoming Season 2 of Peacemaker, I can’t help but feel the absence of Gathegi’s character more acutely. The sneak peek at this new season intriguingly presents Peacemaker (John Cena) being grilled by three potential teammates: Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, and Maxwell Lord. This job interview scene is a humorous take on the Justice Gang dynamic, with Peacemaker trying to impress while the other heroes engage in hushed conversations through seemingly muted microphones. It’s a brief, offbeat moment, but it effectively illustrates how James Gunn’s DCU projects are increasingly intertwined with the Superman universe.

In Season 2 of “Peacemaker,” we’ll encounter multiple universe aspects, featuring a different Peacemaker donning a new outfit and a living variant of his sibling, Keith. As per Gunn, this narrative ties into a pocket universe, a technology crucial to the storyline of “Superman,” which requires Mister Terrific’s skills to deactivate during the film’s climax. However, it seems that Mister Terrific won’t make an appearance in the series despite these DCU connections.

It’s been rumored that Mister Terrific might get a standalone storyline in the DC Universe, but for now, there are no confirmed projects underway. Dichen Gathegi’s recent statements also suggest that he is not aware of any such plans.

Right now, you can catch Superman on the big screen. Peacemaker Season 2 will debut on Thursday, August 21st, only on HBO Max. As for Green Lantern, it is anticipated to be released in 2026.
