In the story of Superman, the main theme revolves around the conflict between Superman (the Man of Steel) and his nemesis, Lex Luthor. Despite Superman’s tireless efforts to improve the world, Lex consistently works against him, attempting to tarnish his image and turn the world against him. For a time, Lex manages to succeed by revealing the truth about the message sent with Kal-El when he arrived on Earth. However, Lois Lane, Superman’s girlfriend, remains skeptical of her partner’s intentions to rule others. She seeks assistance from a few allies, such as Jimmy Olsen, another employee at the Daily Planet. Using his charm and influence, Jimmy convinces Eve Teschmacher, Lex’s girlfriend, to expose her abusive boyfriend. The strategy pays off, resulting in Lex’s downfall by the end of Superman.
In my perspective, although I don’t possess any superpowers like those in comics, Jimmy demonstrates every day that he’s a hero in his own way. It doesn’t hurt that the brilliant Skyler Gisondo portrays him, who has made a name for himself in shows such as The Righteous Gemstones and Santa Clarita Diet. Interestingly enough, delving into Gisondo’s filmography uncovers that he wasn’t new to the comic book movie scene; he had previously appeared in a few underappreciated Marvel films.
Skyler Gisondo Plays a Heartbreaking Part in The Amazing Spider-Man Films
In the Marvel series The Amazing Spider-Man, much like other portrayals of the character, Peter Parker isn’t particularly popular. He endures bullying from Flash Thompson, but one of the rare individuals who accepts him is Gwen Stacy. Their friendship blossoms swiftly, yet it becomes intricate as Peter’s life as Spider-Man gains momentum. Every evening, he swings through the city streets of New York, aiding those in distress as Spider-Man. However, Captain George Stacy, Gwen’s father, disapproves of a vigilante taking matters into his own hands and vows to find the Wall-Crawler. This pledge becomes personal for Peter when he attends dinner at the Stacy household. Skyler Gisondo portrays Howard Stacy, Gwen’s younger brother, and his inquiry about the Spider-Man matter ignites an argument between George and Peter.
Despite not agreeing on many things, they must put aside their disagreements when trouble arises from the Lizard. Regrettably, George perishes during the struggle, leaving his entire family heartbroken. Moreover, in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter violates his vow to keep distance from Gwen. In that film, the Green Goblin throws Gwen off a clock tower, resulting in her demise. Peter is forever changed by this event, but he experiences less sorrow than Howard and the rest of the Stacy family. Luckily, if Jimmy fulfills his potential under James Gunn’s guidance in the DCU, Gisondo won’t have to witness another character saving one of his creations again.
The Sky Is the Limit for Jimmy Olsen in the DCU
Just as Howard does, Gisondo’s character in Superman maintains a grounded demeanor. He assists Superman when he can, but it’s not as if he could battle Ultraman and survive the encounter. The charm of comic books lies in the fact that anyone can be extraordinary, especially with longevity on their side. If the DC Universe ever decides to bestow powers upon Jimmy, there are numerous DC Comics tales it could draw from. In one such narrative, he ingests a serum that grants him super speed. Adopting the alias “Speed Demon,” he matches pace with his pal Superman and combats crime. As time goes by, Jimmy consumes another serum that transforms him into “Elastic Lad,” allowing him to elongate his body similar to Mister Fantastic.
In the universe of DC, it’s clear that a method exists for ordinary individuals to gain superhuman abilities. Jimmy, however, wouldn’t necessarily have to choose this path. Instead, if he were to become his own superhero, it could boost his character’s reputation before his potential standalone series debuts. Portraying Jimmy leveraging his charisma to climb the career ladder on television might be intriguing, but convincing viewers given the DCU’s early stage may prove challenging.
