It sounds unbelievable, but Superman now has a daughter who has become a force of death. You might be wondering, “Didn’t Superman not have a daughter?” If so, you missed the “Warworld Saga” in Action Comics. This story followed Superman and a team of heroes as they journeyed to Warworld, ruled by the villain Mongul, to free the aliens he’d enslaved. During this adventure, Superman rescued a set of incredibly powerful twins, Otho-Ra and Osul-Ra, and adopted them after defeating Mongul. They became known as the Super-Twins, the youngest additions to the Superman family.
The family found themselves in danger when Kryl-Ux, another former slave, started hunting for pieces of Olgrun, the remains of a dangerous god. When Kryl-Ux came after the Fire of Olgrun, which was linked to Osul-Ra, he sent Superman far into the future. Ever since, Superman has been working to stop Kryl-Ux and locate his children. He did find Otho-Ra, but not before being poisoned by a Sun-Eater, which nearly killed him. Luckily, Superman’s friends are devising a rescue plan that involves giving his daughter extraordinary new powers.
Superman’s Daughter Just Became the New Black Racer

In Adventures of Superman: Book of El #7, the Phaelosians have gathered in a star cluster called Izaya’s Belt. Superman is awaiting the Black Racer, who is meant to claim his life, but there’s a plan to intervene. Otho-Ra intends to steal the Black Racer’s belt – which contains another powerful being called the Wrath of Olgrun – and ignite it with the energy of the cluster’s five stars. Her goal is to place the lit belt on Superman before the Racer can reach her.
Some time later, the Black Racer arrived, rushing directly towards Superman’s body. However, before he could reach him, Otho-Ra appeared from a nearby sun and stepped in to stop him. She seized the belt and started working on her mission. The Black Racer, distracted, began pursuing Otho-Ra around Izaya’s Belt. Luckily, the Phaelosians helped by using chains made from the Source to slow him down. Otho-Ra managed to activate two sections of the belt before disappearing into a radioactive nebula.
Otho-Ra is confused and haunted by images of Olgrun, but she perseveres. Although another racer momentarily gains on her, a Phaelosian named Khan-El assists her in collecting the last star’s light for the belt. The Black Racer explains he can’t be defeated, only surpassed, and vanishes as Otho-Ra takes on the mantle of the new Black Racer. With Olgrun’s power now flowing through her, Otho-Ra successfully revives Superman, and they share a heartfelt embrace.
DC Just Set Up a Tragic Fate for Superman’s Daughter

As a fan, I’ve always found the Black Racer fascinating – he’s not the Death in the DC Universe, but a powerful force representing it. What’s really cool is that he’s an ancient New God, and essentially unkillable; you can’t defeat him, only change what he is. The latest story is wild because Otho-Ra didn’t steal his power, she’s become the Black Racer! That means she’s now responsible for guiding souls to the afterlife. Luckily, this all happens way in the future, so our current DC heroes aren’t impacted, but honestly, taking on that role can’t be easy for her.
I suspected that with Phillip Kennedy Johnson finishing his run on DC’s Adventures of Superman: Book of El, the story would tie up many loose ends. Unfortunately, the Super-Twins haven’t proven popular with most readers outside of Johnson’s own stories, and many fans aren’t particularly interested in them. It seemed likely this series would be used to remove them from the narrative, and the recent development of Otho-Ra becoming the new Black Racer confirms that feeling.
I’m hoping I’m mistaken, but I think it’s awesome that Superman’s daughter has become a representation of death. As a Phaelosian, she’s already incredibly strong, similar to a Kryptonian, and becoming the new Black Racer likely makes her even more powerful. However, I’m worried about what this means for Otho-Ra. If the Black Racer’s role is essential, will Otho-Ra be able to return to his own time? I wouldn’t be shocked if this change permanently separates Otho-Ra from Superman.
