James Gunn, who’s leading the revamped DC Studios with Peter Safran, hasn’t confirmed plans yet for a follow-up to the hit movie “Superman” from 2025. David Corenswet played the latest Superman on July 11, 2025, and the film has been a big success for DCU. However, Gunn remains tight-lipped about the possibility of a sequel to “Superman”.
When asked about a potential follow-up to ‘Superman,’ James Gunn replied on Threads that ‘Superman 2’ refers to the second installment of the Superman series. The original film has already earned approximately $217 million globally, which is almost equal to its production budget of $225 million. It has also received positive reviews from critics (83%) and audiences (93%) on Rotten Tomatoes. Given the movie’s success, a sequel seems likely, but Gunn appears more focused on expanding the revamped DC Universe in other projects first.

In a promotional event for “Superman,” David Corenswet (who plays Superman) and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor) took a lie detector test together for “Vanity Fair.” Corenswet admitted he’s signed on for a sequel to “Superman,” but James Gunn has remained tight-lipped about it.
As I shared with Entertainment Weekly, the project I’m currently developing is indeed connected to Superman in some way. However, calling it a traditional Superman sequel might not be entirely accurate. Instead, it seems to be more about continuing or expanding upon the Superman universe, perhaps through a standalone narrative or a spiritual successor. Given the rich tapestry of characters and storylines set up by the original series, such an approach could prove quite intriguing.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my excitement about the possibility of David Corenswet reprising his role as Superman for another solo film. With James Gunn’s impressive track record directing the Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and gearing up for season 2 of Peacemaker, it seems that follow-ups and sequels are right up his alley. Although we’ll surely see Corenswet’s Superman in various DCU productions, a direct sequel to
