Superman’s Edi Gathegi Teases DCU’s Version of Mister Terrific, “We’ve Taken Some Liberties”

Edi Gathegi recently provided insights about his role as Mister Terrific in the upcoming DC Universe film directed by James Gunn, revealing that while the character’s appearance is consistent with the comics, there will be some changes to his backstory. The film, which introduces a universe already inhabited by established heroes, features Mister Terrific alongside other characters like Green Lantern Guy Gardner (played by Nathan Fillion) and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced). Gathegi explained that DC Studios has taken creative liberties with his character, even designing new gear for him to make him a distinctive figure in this new cinematic universe.

On set, Gathegi shared that the portrayal of his character is remarkably similar to its comic book counterpart, which he finds fascinating. However, certain aspects have been altered. While the essence of Mr. Terrific remains tied to the original source material, this film doesn’t delve deeply into his backstory as you would find in the comics. Instead, we’re creating a new version of Mr. Terrific for the DC movie universe. Additionally, one distinctive feature exclusive to the film is a unique vehicle that doesn’t appear in the comics. It’s quite exciting and toy-worthy; I believe children watching will want it for Christmas.

For those new here, Michael Holt, also known as Mister Terrific, is one of the brightest minds in the DC Universe. His backstory is marked by sadness, as he lost his wife and unborn child in a tragic accident. Overwhelmed with grief, he was stopped from taking his life by the Spectre, who motivated him to channel his prodigious intelligence towards doing good instead. This character possesses an extraordinary talent known as “universal aptitude,” which enables him to swiftly master any skill almost effortlessly.

Mr. Terrific in a Lived-In DCU

The way Superman interacts with Mister Terrific shows how James Gunn’s new DC Universe is different from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead of following the pattern used in the MCU, where each hero was introduced separately in their own movies before they all came together, this new DC universe starts by presenting a world that already has history and consequences. In fact, it’s been suggested that this new universe began even before Superman with an animated series called Creature Commandos, which established Amanda Waller’s ongoing operations and ties directly to the events of Peacemaker. Additionally, Gunn has mentioned that metahumans have been part of society for at least 300 years, meaning their existence isn’t a shocking revelation but something that’s just a fact of life in this universe.

In this storytelling approach, Superman’s universe is established not only as a standalone film but also as an expansive, dynamic world. The movie sets the stage for future projects and plotlines from its inception itself. For instance, the appearance of villain Angela Spica, or The Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría), serves as a storyline link to the upcoming film, The Authority. This character introduces backstory elements that can be further explored in subsequent tales, effectively setting up the DCU’s theatrical introduction. This method streamlines the narrative by skipping years of initial setup and dives straight into the heart of the DCU.

Superman is scheduled to fly into theaters on July 11th.
