Supernatural’s Greatest Episode Shows Exactly Why Season 16 Should Never Happen

As a huge fan, I still can’t quite believe Supernatural ended in 2020! It really left a mark, and honestly, people are still wondering if we might somehow get a Season 16. I mean, the show wrapped things up for Sam, Dean, and Cas, but let’s be real, they’ve all come back from the dead before! It seems like everyone – the fans and the actors – would be up for revisiting that world. Season 15’s finale was pretty conclusive, but if any show could pull off a continuation, it’s Supernatural. It’s just that kind of series.

Though nothing is confirmed, both Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki have expressed openness to returning for more Supernatural. Ackles said he’s currently too busy but would be willing if the opportunity arose, while Padalecki gave a definite “yes” under the right circumstances. These comments suggest a continuation isn’t out of the question, but it’s also not guaranteed. However, considering the show’s strongest episodes, attempting a sequel or a 16th season might not be the best idea.

Supernatural’s Greatest Episode Is Where the CW Series Was Supposed to End

Fans often debate which episode of Supernatural is the best, with opinions typically split between Season 5’s “Swan Song” and Season 6’s “The French Mistake.” While “The French Mistake” really showcases what made the show so popular – its clever humor, willingness to break the mold, and strong acting – it’s often considered one of the cast’s favorites, as several told Entertainment Weekly. However, looking at IMDb ratings, the Season 5 finale actually ranks slightly higher. Personally, I’d agree that it’s the more impactful and emotionally satisfying episode.

“Swan Song” beautifully wraps up five seasons of story, making it one of the most emotionally powerful episodes of Supernatural. It clearly felt like the intended series finale, and it was Eric Kripke’s last contribution, even though the show went on. The episode showcases how much the characters have developed throughout the original run, placing them in surprising yet satisfying positions by the end. It’s a heartfelt tribute to the story and characters, offering them touching goodbyes while still maintaining the show’s trademark humor. If it had been the last episode, it would have been a fantastic ending for Supernatural. In fact, it might have been better for the show overall, even though it’s hard to say that.

Supernatural’s Missed Chance to End on a High Proves Season 16 Shouldn’t Happen

Although “Swan Song” provided a fitting end to Sam and Dean’s journey, the actual series finale, “Carry On,” has left many fans disappointed and sparked a lot of debate. The biggest issue is Dean Winchester’s fate, which feels particularly dark considering his character development throughout the series. An earlier, discarded ending – where Dean embraced the possibility of a life beyond hunting – was a more satisfying and surprising conclusion to his story. The heaven scene in the finale has also been criticized, both for leaving out certain characters and for feeling out of place with the overall tone of the show. In comparison, “Swan Song” felt more true to everything that made Supernatural special.

In retrospect, the show could have ended on a high note, even though some great episodes came about because it didn’t. Ultimately, it traded a satisfying conclusion for a less impressive one, and risks repeating that mistake if it returns. A potential Season 16 would face significant challenges to feel new and worthwhile. It’s possible the show could even deliver a third, even weaker, ending. Maybe it should learn from the mistakes of its finale and leave the story as it is. While fans will miss Sam and Dean, it’s not worth damaging their story further by bringing them back.
