Users of Surface Pro 11 have recently experienced a significant reduction in their device’s battery life, with the battery capacity being restricted to only 50%. This issue prevents the restoration of normal battery functionality for affected devices.
The issue was flagged by a Surface Pro 11 user:
On my Surface Pro from the 11th edition, I noticed that the ‘Battery Limit’ mode is no longer available in the UEFI. Recently, an update was installed (possibly a firmware update), and ever since, the system has been automatically restricting the battery charge to 50%. Despite the absence of any visible toggle, it appears the system is still abiding by this 50% limit based on its post-update behavior.
Others in that thread have experienced the same problem.
Microsoft is looking into the problem, which seems to be related to the “Battery Saver” feature that’s available on specific Surface models.
Typically, there’s a switch for that feature to turn on or off, but due to a glitch, the switch seems to have vanished from sight.
The issue has caused frustration among users. “TJ” in the thread mentioned above said:
This significant issue originating from Microsoft significantly impairs the mobility usage of our laptops. Given that we bought these devices primarily for portability, this problem is quite frustrating! It’s disheartening to see that Microsoft has been slow to address this, especially considering how inappropriate it is.
The problem appears to have affected users since at least August 9, 2025.
What is “Battery Limit” on a Surface Pro 11?
On certain Surface devices, you can adjust a feature known as “Power Supply Mode” within the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) settings. This option is typically activated on devices that are constantly plugged in, like computers used at points of sale.
The “Battery Limit” setting aims to prevent your Surface device from charging past 50%, a strategy designed to enhance the overall battery lifespan by restricting its maximum charge.
Some smartphones have similar functionality, though the cap is usually 80% on phones.
The following devices have the Battery Limit option:
- Surface Go (all generations)
- Surface Pro 7 and later
- Surface Laptop 3 and later
- Surface Book 3
- Surface Laptop Studio (all generations)
- Surface Laptop Go (all generations)
- Surface Laptop SE
For now, Microsoft provides instructions on how to activate or deactivate a specific feature, but some users are unable to perform this action currently.
A current problem is causing Surface Pro 11 computers to lack the Battery Limit feature that should be visible on their settings.
The extent of the problem isn’t entirely known yet, but a Microsoft staff member has verified that they are currently looking into the matter.
Surface Pro 11 battery life
The Surface Pro 11, equipped with the Snapdragon X processor, typically delivers excellent battery performance. In fact, during our extensive testing for the Surface Pro 11 review, our Editor-in-Chief, Daniel Rubino, consistently managed to use it for more than 10 hours in real-world scenarios.
The figure you see isn’t a benchmark score; instead, it represents the real-life battery performance that Rubino observed when he checked the Windows Battery Report. The battery life of the Surface Pro 11 reached approximately 15 hours at its maximum but dropped as low as 6 hours and 20 minutes during gaming activities.
Compared to other computers powered by Snapdragon X, the Surface Pro 11 has a relatively shorter battery life because of its design. However, under regular usage conditions, the Surface Pro 11 can manage to run for an entire workday.
The Snapdragon X processor, found within the Surface Pro 11, is a significant factor contributing to its impressive standby battery endurance. Notably, even over a full night’s rest, Rubino observed minimal decrease in power consumption, at most a 2% loss.
Indeed, the test outcomes you’re referring to were obtained using a Surface Pro 11 that didn’t have any battery-related problems. However, it’s important to note that the ongoing “Battery Limit” mode issue can significantly decrease the length of time the PC can run on a single charge.
