Surprise Donkey Kong Controller for Nintendo Switch Goes Up for Pre-Orders Today

Today marks an exciting day for enthusiasts of Nintendo’s iconic ape character, as the game Donkey Kong Bananza has been released on Nintendo Switch 2! To make this launch even more special, Turtle Beach has announced a new wireless controller designed specifically for the system and the original Nintendo Switch. This controller showcases our favorite characters, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong, and boasts a unique lenticular design that changes based on its viewing angle.

In a press release, Turtle Beach CEO Cris Keirn discussed this new gaming accessory and their partnership with Nintendo.

As a dedicated fan myself, I’m thrilled to announce that our Nintendo-licensed controllers are crafted for fellow enthusiasts who share an unyielding affection for Nintendo’s iconic characters, mesmerizing universes, and timeless games. Our latest Donkey Kong-themed wireless controller is brimming with unique features, offering a one-of-a-kind gaming experience. It seamlessly integrates motion control support with dynamic artwork that showcases various Donkey Kong visuals based on your viewing angle.

Currently, you can pre-order Turtle Beach’s Rematch Wireless Pro Gamepad on Amazon, with its official release set for October 12th. This controller works with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 but doesn’t feature the new ‘C’ button. However, users can still initiate GameChat via the home screen, which softens the impact of not having a dedicated button. The absence of this button does make it slightly less convenient compared to having one readily available.

As with other licensed controllers, this one won’t support NFC technology, meaning players won’t be able to use it to scan the new Donkey Kong and Pauline amiibo figures or any others. Nonetheless, by forgoing these features, Turtle Beach has managed to price this controller affordably at $59.99, making it a more budget-friendly option compared to Nintendo’s standard Pro Controller.

On the same day as the unveiling of the latest Donkey Kong Bananza controller, it’s interesting to note that the visual style isn’t directly tied to the game itself. Instead, it appears to draw inspiration from Donkey Kong Country Returns, noticeable in its use of silhouette stages. In this game, traditional appearances of DK and Diddy were swapped for shadow-covered versions during these stages. These levels stood out as some of the most iconic in the game, making their design choice here quite logical. Additionally, considering that Donkey Kong Country Returns received an HD remaster on the Switch earlier this year, this connection seems fitting too.

For most of the Switch’s lifespan, Donkey Kong took a back seat in terms of new games. Known as one of Nintendo’s earliest characters, Donkey Kong (DK) primarily appeared in remakes and updated versions of previous titles, along with sporadic appearances in Mario-related games. However, it seems that this trend is about to shift as we enter the Nintendo Switch 2 era, with “Donkey Kong Bananza” being one of the initial major exclusives for the new system. Here’s hoping that this marks a resurgence of Donkey Kong content for fans in the years ahead!
