Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is about to cancel or end several ongoing series, and one is attempting a major plot jump—skipping three years into the future—in a bid to stay alive. Shonen Jump recently announced new series would be starting, which means some existing ones will be discontinued. While a small number of series get to finish their stories naturally, most are cut short before they can reach a planned conclusion.
Shuhei Tanizaki’s manga, Gonron Egg, started last fall with a lot of potential as a new science-fiction fantasy adventure. The story follows Gonron and a prince who is still in his egg as they battle dangerous monsters, but it hasn’t found a large audience. Recent developments suggest the series is nearing its conclusion – the latest chapter jumps forward three years and sets the stage for a final, quick resolution.
Gonron Egg Faces Cancellation With Surprise Time Skip

The manga Gonron Egg is facing potential cancellation due to slow progress – it’s only reached chapter 14. However, a recent update revealed that Gonron has finished a three-year training period, advanced through a time skip. This training was hinted at as crucial for unlocking the full potential of Gonron and Ohma’s combined abilities and connecting them with the revolutionary army. Surprisingly, instead of showing this training, the story is jumping directly into the war.
The story’s current approach is good because it keeps a faster pace. Modern audiences don’t have much patience for lengthy training sequences like those often found in older Shonen Jump series. However, this change also feels like a last-ditch effort, as many manga get cancelled after only 20 chapters. While it might be an attempt to save the series, it’s more likely a sign that the creators are rushing towards a conclusion.
What Does This Mean for Shonen Jump?

Typically, big developments like these happen much later in a Shonen Jump series, as it builds towards a major story arc. However, it seems this series is heading towards its conclusion surprisingly early. This early time skip feels like the creator is rushing to create an ending, using ideas they were saving for the future. Over the next few weeks, fans will likely see Gonron Egg make a series of important decisions in rapid succession.
It’s uncertain how much longer Gonron Egg will continue before it’s cancelled, but cancellation seems likely and could happen soon. While a series is usually considered safe after a full year, this one probably won’t last that long. It started with promise, but its popularity has declined in recent months.
