Surviving Earth – REVIEW

Who is Surviving Earth?

I recently saw ‘Surviving Earth,’ the first feature film from Thea Gajic, and it really stuck with me. It’s set in Bristol in 2015, but honestly, it feels incredibly relevant today. The film centers around Vlad, played by Slavko Sobin, a refugee from the former Yugoslavia. He’s turned his life around after struggling with drug use, now working as a counselor. But he’s also a musician – a harmonica player – and he’s really pushing his band to take a risk and play a larger venue. It’s a passion project for him, something he cares about deeply, almost as much as his daughter, Maria (Olive Gray), and his beloved harmonica – those two things seem to be his everything.

Vlad and his daughter have a strained relationship, but he’s working hard to rebuild it and be the father he wants to be. Although he’s overcome drug use, his life remains fragile, with the urge to relapse always present. When things go wrong, he struggles and tends to self-destruct, refusing to pay bills and facing pressure from the council to leave his two-bedroom home – a situation rooted in a controversial law from 2015 that made this type of eviction possible.

While the acting is generally strong, Slavka Sobin truly stands out as the lead. He portrays a character who is both sympathetic and troubled, and convincingly shows how being overwhelmed by circumstances can lead to poor choices – a theme powerfully echoed by the famous ‘Choose Life’ poster from Trainspotting. The film, titled Surviving Earth, starts with a somewhat unclear premise, but its meaning becomes clearer as the story unfolds into a surprisingly touching drama.
