The tribe wasn’t ready to hug it out.
On the October 29th episode of Survivor, Shannon Fairweather was eliminated by the other contestants. After being voted off, she asked those who voted against her for a hug. Jawan Pitts and Steven Ramm gave her one, but Sage Ahrens-Nichols did not.
Sage offered Shannon a handshake instead of a hug, explaining she wanted any future embrace to feel sincere and that she wasn’t up to hugging right now. She said she looked forward to hugging her later and wished her well.
Honestly, I was really surprised by how Sage reacted, but Shannon actually said she understood and respected her choice after the show aired. It was good to see Shannon be so gracious, even though it was unexpected!
I really care about those people, so it hurt when someone didn’t want my hug,” the 28-year-old told Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview. “But I understood—Sage is always true to herself, and it wouldn’t have been like her to force a hug.
Shannon said she had a feeling there was more to the story than she initially knew. She was surprised to learn that Sage was upset with her and saw things differently.
Shannon added that she’d been discussing this with Sage, so she wasn’t entirely surprised. After reviewing the footage, she realized how easily fear, paranoia, and the pressure of the game could affect people’s behavior.
Fortunately, Shannon and Sage have resolved their issues since the show finished filming. Shannon shared that Sage, who is 30 years old, contacted her after she left the show’s location.
Shannon explained that they had many conversations where they each shared their viewpoints, and she believes the other person was genuinely surprised. She added that the other person had also expressed surprise at how Shannon respected and acknowledged her feelings and position.
Even though things were tough on the show, Shannon shared that she truly values her friendship with Sage.
Shannon confirmed that the two did indeed hug after the final episode aired.
She added, “We were really looking forward to that.”
