Sydney Sweeney and Ben Foster reveal how one Christy scene was “ruined” while filming

I just saw the Christy Martin biopic, and it’s finally here in UK cinemas! It’s an incredible story – she was a huge boxing star back in the 90s and early 2000s, and the film doesn’t hold back. It’s truly inspiring, but also really tough to watch at times, as it shows everything she went through. I highly recommend it.

Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in Euphoria, delivers what many are calling the best performance of her career as the main character, a boxer. She stars alongside Ben Foster, who plays James V Martin, the boxer’s ex-husband – a man convicted of attempting to murder his wife in 2010.

Christy Martin is often seen with her Pomeranian dogs, first Casey and now Champ, at film premieres and public appearances. These dogs add a sweet and charming touch to her public image.

Foster remembered that he and Christy didn’t talk to each other while filming, which he felt was fitting for their roles. He also shared a funny observation: Christy was in a scene holding Champ, the actual dog used in the production, and that felt like a subtle, indirect compliment.

“And when I walked in, the dog ruined the take by barking over [Sweeney’s] dialogue.

“And I was like, ‘Oh okay, good. It’s making people uncomfortable in the right ways’.”

Smiling, Sweeney added: “The dog knew.”

Sydney Sweeney shared some funny stories about working with the dog actor in the film. Apparently, the dog wasn’t interested in being a star at all! “He didn’t seem to care about connecting with anyone,” Sweeney said with a laugh. “He clearly had no idea he was even in a movie!”

You know, there’s this one shot where I’m pretending to box outside my trailer, and honestly, we got incredibly lucky. Casey almost walked out of frame, but thankfully stayed put! The dog, though… let’s just say he wasn’t a fan of being on camera and made things a little tricky.

“Casey thought she was just there for more friends and just wanted to hang out.”

She also felt the dog they used wasn’t quite right for the role, specifically that its gender didn’t fit the character. She couldn’t say exactly why, but it seemed off, though it was the only dog that resembled the actress.

Sweeney mentioned that Christy Martin often came to the film set during production, and they developed a close friendship as they worked together.

I was really excited to hear what Martin Scorsese had to say about Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance, and he didn’t disappoint! He told Flickering Myth she ‘did a great job,’ which, coming from him, is huge praise. It’s awesome to see him recognize her talent.

She added that many people might not realize Sweeney trained in MMA as a teen, giving her a natural competitive drive. She also really enjoyed learning to box.
