Sydney Sweeney Breaks Her Silence on “Racist” American Eagle Jeans Ad

She’s responded to the criticism surrounding her American Eagle jeans ad, stating the campaign was simply meant to express her affection for the brand.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Sydney Sweeney addressed the backlash her American Eagle ad received online. The ad featured the tagline “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” which some people interpreted as a problematic statement about white genetic superiority and labeled as racist. Despite American Eagle standing by the campaign – emphasizing it was simply about highlighting “her jeans” and “her story” – Sweeney responded to the controversy by saying:

I was really surprised by how people reacted. I only participated because I genuinely like the jeans and the company behind them. I definitely don’t agree with some of the opinions that were linked to the campaign, and it’s frustrating to see people assume things about my motives that aren’t accurate.

Sweeney continued to expand on her previous comments made to GQ earlier in the year, adding:

I’ve always believed in bringing people together and rejecting hate, and I usually don’t respond to media coverage, either good or bad. However, I’ve realized that staying silent hasn’t helped resolve recent issues – it’s actually made things worse. I’m hoping we can focus on common ground and unity in the new year instead of dwelling on our differences.

Sydney Sweeney Has Seen Several Movies Struggling at the Box Office

Black Bear Pictures

Regardless of whether it was related to the criticism she received from the American Eagle campaign, Sydney Sweeney’s initial movie successes, like Anyone but You and Immaculate, were followed by a string of box office failures in 2025.

During a two-week period in August, two films starring Sweeney flopped. The small independent crime drama Americana didn’t gain much attention in theaters, and Ron Howard’s survival thriller Eden, featuring Ana de Armas and Jude Law, only earned $2.5 million worldwide. Just when it seemed things couldn’t get any worse, another film, Christy, proved to be a disaster.

The biographical boxing film Christy was expected to boost the actress’s career in November, and early reactions suggested it might even be an Oscar contender. Unfortunately, the movie flopped badly upon its wide release, earning a very poor $2.1 million at the box office overall. International showings contributed only $137,595 to that total, making it one of the worst opening weekends in recent memory.

Rebecca Sweeney is hoping her new erotic thriller, The Housemaid, will reverse a string of box office disappointments and launch her into a successful 2026. The film, which stars Amanda Seyfried, is about…

Millie hopes a new job as a live-in maid for the rich couple, Nina and Andrew Winchester, will help her leave her past behind. However, the job quickly turns dangerous, becoming a seductive and secretive game of power and scandal. The Winchesters present a perfect image, but behind closed doors, their world is far from what it appears.
