Lionsgate is releasing a new film starring Sydney Sweeney and Kirsten Dunst at a rather unusual moment – a time when many are still talking about the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon. This timing has sparked a lot of online discussion among moviegoers, with some playfully comparing it to the summer’s biggest box office event.
The sequel to the hit film The Housemaid, titled The Housemaid’s Secret, is officially coming to theaters on December 17, 2027. The film will star Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried. However, it will be released at the same time as Avengers: Secret Wars, and it’s uncertain whether it can compete with the massive popularity and marketing power of the Marvel franchise, despite the success of the first Housemaid movie.
Is It an Attempt to Recreate Barbenheimer-level Hype?
When one door closes… The Housemaid’s Secret: coming to theaters December 17, 2027.

When Lionsgate announced the release date for their new film so close to the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars, movie fans quickly voiced their concerns online, with many believing it wouldn’t stand a chance. While the simultaneous release of Barbie and Oppenheimer proved successful and even became a cultural phenomenon, most people doubt this new pairing will have the same luck. One user commented, “They’re really trying to copy the Barbenheimer strategy!” Another added, “Releasing a movie against Avengers: Secret Wars? Good luck with that.” Some even joked about a crossover, saying, “I’ll be watching The Housemaid’s Secret Wars!” Overall, it’s a gamble, especially since Secret Wars is currently slated for December of next year – a release date that seems unlikely given Marvel’s lengthy production process and the fact that filming hasn’t begun.
As a film fan, I was really interested to read Lionsgate’s take on the success of The Housemaid. Apparently, the studio head, Adam Fogelson, shared that the first film did incredibly well – almost $400 million globally! – and people are clearly buzzing about it online. He said audiences really connected with the unique experience of seeing it in theaters and are eager to find out what happens next. That’s why they’re excited to adapt Freida McFadden’s sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, hoping to create another thrilling and fun movie for fans.
