Artwork depicting an ideal fit for Sylvester Stallone within James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe is recently popular among fans. Known for his iconic roles in the Rocky and Rambo series, Stallone has also graced action-packed movies like The Expendables, Cobra, and Escape Plan. His versatility shines through in his work across various genres, including comedies, dramas (such as Tulsa King), and even superhero roles, where he portrayed Stakar Ogord in Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
As a fan eagerly following developments in the world of superhero cinematography, I’ve been speculating about the possibility of working with James Gunn again, given our past collaborative success in Marvel’s universe. Known for re-uniting talented actors he’s had fruitful relationships with, Gunn has consistently expressed admiration for Sylvester Stallone.
In our previous collaboration on The Suicide Squad in 2021, I lent my voice to the formidable King Shark, and now, fan art circulating on DeviantArt envisions me as Ted Grant’s Wildcat in the DCU – a role that would truly be an honor to assume.
Intriguingly, it seems there may already be hints of Wildcat’s DCU debut, making this potential casting even more intriguing.
Why Sylvester Stallone Would Be Perfect For Ted Grant’s Wildcat in the DCU
In 1942, Ted Grant, a renowned heavyweight boxer, made his debut in “Sensation Comics #1”. He was wrongfully accused of murdering his mentor, “Socker” Smith, but managed to break out of prison when Flint and Skinner, his managers, attempted to have him killed. This incident resulted in the death of several police officers, making Grant a fugitive. To clear his name, he adopted the Wildcat persona. It is later disclosed that Grant possesses nine lives due to magical changes by Zatara. However, his other abilities stem from his boxing prowess and rigorous training.
Sylvester Stallone becomes crucial for the role of Wildcat. Although he wasn’t a real-life boxer, his portrayal as Rocky Balboa – a character he wrote and first played in the 1976 movie “Rocky” – fits perfectly for this part. Over the years, Stallone, often referred to as “Sly,” has played Balboa in multiple films such as “Rocky II,” “Rocky III,” “Rocky IV,” “Rocky V,” “Rocky Balboa,” “Creed,” and “Creed II.” This extensive experience in portraying boxers gives him a unique understanding of the sport, which would undeniably contribute to his portrayal of Ted Grant in the DC Universe.
In the 2025 reboot of Superman, the mural inside the Hall of Justice showcases a visibly prominent Wildcat, indicating that this character has already established himself as a key superhero within the DC Universe. It’s exciting to imagine Sylvester Stallone stepping into the role of a seasoned and tough hero in the DCU, but it remains uncertain whether he’ll reprise his role as King Shark from Creature Commandos, voiced by Diedrich Bader. Given Ted Grant’s background as a world-class boxer who trained iconic characters such as Batman, Black Canary, and Superman, there are numerous possibilities for Wildcat to make an appearance within the DCU.
