Sylvester Stallone recently shared that filming a 1993 action movie directed by Marco Brambilla involved the two most perilous stunts of his entire career. While the film is known for its intense action, two scenes were particularly risky to execute, especially looking back on them now.
In a video for GQ where he discusses his most famous roles, Stallone identified the scene in Demolition Man – where his character, Detective John Spartan, is seized by a large robotic arm – as one of the riskiest stunts he’s ever performed.
The actor explained the claw remains vivid in his memory because the machinery occasionally malfunctioned, and the powerful metal claws could cause serious injury.
Stallone shared that another challenging scene involved his character, Spartan, being trapped inside a filling water tank. He explained there was no easy way to get out if anything had gone wrong during filming. Here’s what he had to say:
They originally froze me in a round, incredibly strong plexiglass tub – you couldn’t even break it with a sledgehammer. Then they started filling it with warm oil, and it rose up to around my chin. The idea was that if the process took longer than 30 seconds, the oil would reach my nose, and I’d be completely trapped because the lid was bolted shut.
I had a couple of guys standing by with sledgehammers and axes. After the scene finished, I asked them to try and break it open. They hit it about twenty times, but couldn’t even make a dent. It was unbelievable!
Sylvester Stallone was a major action star throughout the 80s and 90s, but while Demolition Man featured plenty of action, it’s not usually ranked as highly as his classic Rambo or Rocky films. Nevertheless, it was one of his most popular and financially successful movies of the decade, earning $159 million around the world.
Featuring Wesley Snipes and Sandra Bullock, the movie centers on Stallone’s character, a Spartan warrior revived from a long sleep, who goes after a dangerous enemy. Critics weren’t overly impressed with the film, and it currently has a 66
In 1993, Sylvester Stallone starred in both Demolition Man and Cliffhanger, which, along with Judge Dredd (1995) and Cop Land (1997), are some of his most well-known films from the 1990s. A remake of Cliffhanger featuring Lily James is currently in development, and the character of Judge Dredd reappeared in the 2012 film Dredd, with Karl Urban in the role.
While characters like Rocky and Rambo have reappeared in several films over the last two decades, we haven’t seen a return to the worlds of Spartan or Demolition Man – until now, potentially. Sylvester Stallone announced in 2020 that a sequel to Demolition Man was being developed.
We haven’t heard much about the project since it was first announced, so it’s uncertain if it will proceed. However, if a sequel to Demolition Man is made, the stunts will probably be performed with much greater safety measures.
