Recently, several popular movie series have surprised audiences by killing off long-standing characters. A prime example is Rocky Balboa, who was almost killed off in a planned spin-off movie.
Sylvester Stallone appeared to retire from playing Rocky after Rocky V in 1990, following years of intense boxing movies. But he surprised audiences by returning to the role in Rocky Balboa sixteen years later. Then, in 2015, the Rocky story continued with Creed, a new film that focused on Adonis Creed, the son of Apollo Creed, played by Michael B. Jordan, while still featuring Stallone as Rocky. In an interview with GQ, Stallone shared that he managed to avoid having his character killed off, which was initially the director Ryan Coogler’s plan. He explained that he was lucky to escape that fate.
I always felt uneasy about the project. Ryan Coogler kept trying to get me on board for two or three years, but I resisted. The script called for Rocky to die – he was supposed to develop Lou Gehrig’s disease. I’m really against killing off characters like that. I’d prefer to see them simply leave and start a new life, rather than have the audience feel so down with their death.
After we moved past that initial hurdle, I decided to try it. It involved a lot of emotional performance since I couldn’t rely on physical action or fighting. It was a good creative challenge, and ultimately, it worked out well.
Sylvester Stallone Had Been Leaving His Big Franchises, but Found a New One on TV
In recent years, Sylvester Stallone seems to be retiring many of his iconic roles. After leaving the Creed series following Creed II in 2018, he also concluded his portrayal of John Rambo with Rambo: Last Blood in 2019. More recently, he took a backseat in The Expend4bles, letting Jason Statham become the lead.
Despite facing potential endings to many phases of his career, Sylvester Stallone has achieved new success with his first leading role in a television series, Tulsa King. The show, currently in its third season on Paramount+, features Stallone as Dwight “The General” Manfredi, an ex-Mafia boss who tries to reclaim his power after being released from prison following a 25-year sentence. Tulsa King has become a popular streaming series, and a fourth season has already been approved, keeping Stallone busy for the foreseeable future.
While another Creed movie is probably in the works, the series is now focused on Adonis Creed, not Rocky Balboa. This likely means Sylvester Stallone will reprise his role in a limited capacity, if at all. However, because Stallone fought to keep Rocky alive during the first Creed film, a return – even a small one – remains possible as long as the character isn’t permanently gone.
