As a critic, I’ve watched Sylvester Stallone navigate a remarkably long career, and it’s been fascinating to see him keep reinventing himself. Even as he’s aged, he’s managed to breathe new life into classics like Rocky with the Creed films, and keep the Rambo series going. He even launched The Expendables in 2010, hoping to create another big action franchise. While the first three Expendables films did okay, the recent attempt to reboot the series with Expend4bles was a major disappointment. With a $100 million budget, it only grossed $51 million worldwide, despite packing in a ton of action stars – Stallone, Statham, 50 Cent, Jaa, Lundgren, and even Megan Fox. 2019’s Rambo: Last Blood didn’t fare much better, failing to break the $100 million mark either. It seems even action icons can’t guarantee box office success these days.
After disappointing results, most people thought the Expendables and Rambo movies were finished. However, that’s not true. Millennium Media, known for action franchises like Expendables and the Olympus Has Fallen series starring Gerard Butler, has made a new deal with Lionsgate Pictures.
Lionsgate now owns the rights to distribute and produce content from both the Rambo and Expendables movie series worldwide. This includes not just future films and TV shows, but also potential video games and other interactive experiences based on The Expendables. They will also be the primary producer of any future Rambo TV series.
Lionsgate’s Brian Goldsmith announced the agreement, explaining that it adds to the company’s strong collection of popular action movie series and shows their dedication to creating high-quality content for various channels.
Jonathan Yunger, the president of Millennium Media, explained that the goal is to provide these film series with the resources, creative assistance, and worldwide distribution they need to succeed.
Rambo Prequel Continuing to Move Forward

Despite the recent deal between Lionsgate and Millennium, the prequel film focusing on a young John Rambo is still moving forward. Noah Centineo, known for his roles in Black Adam and He-Man, remains cast as the younger Rambo. The movie will explore Rambo’s origins during the Vietnam War and is intended to breathe new life into the Rambo franchise, which Lionsgate hopes it will do.
It’s unclear if there’s much life left in The Expendables franchise. The idea of bringing back classic action stars seemed promising at first, but lost steam after the biggest names—Stallone, Van Damme, Norris, Schwarzenegger, and Willis—had their turns. It’s difficult to imagine the series continuing successfully with different actors, or even a reboot featuring a new group of action veterans.
