As a gaming enthusiast, I’m always excited when studios like Nightdive Studios, known for their exceptional work in revitalizing classic games, start gearing up for a new, larger project. Recently, they’ve posted job listings for a Level and Quest Designer, and an Environmental Artist. It seems they’re readying themselves to embark on a journey that promises something big!
From what we understand so far, the specifics about the project are still under wraps, but job postings suggest that it will be developed using Unreal Engine 5, alongside other tools such as Blender. Clues about the project’s character can be found in some of the job descriptions, particularly in the Essential Duties and Responsibilities, as well as the Preferred Qualifications sections. For example, candidates for both positions are expected to enjoy Sci-Fi and Horror media and have a fondness for retro video games.
The Level and Quest Designer will collaborate closely with Environmental Artists to create levels that are visually engaging yet mechanically sound. Moreover, the job descriptions hint at the use of environmental storytelling and scripted events, which suggests that Nightdive Studios could be preparing for a new installment in the remake series of their classic horror shooter game, System Shock.
Restating in a simpler manner: Given its age and recent remastered version showing some outdated elements, it’s understandable that fans would expect Nightdive Studios to consider remaking System Shock 2. This game has been influential in shaping gameplay mechanics, level design, and environmental storytelling for many other games, such as Deus Ex and the BioShock series from Irrational Games.
25th Anniversary Remaster of System Shock 2 was launched on PC in June, followed by a console version in July. The remastered game boasts compatibility with contemporary tech, supporting resolutions as high as 4K. Additionally, it offers a chilling RPG experience at top frame rates and has been optimized to fully support controllers through an updated user interface. Other enhancements include upgraded character models, animations, and environments. Lastly, the game now supports co-op multiplayer mode.
Previously, Nightdive Studios ventured beyond simple remastering when they developed the System Shock Remake. Unlike its precursor, System Shock 2, this classic horror shooter featured distinct differences in level design, game mechanics, and narrative structure. The game primarily centered around a player who wakes up on Citadel Station, navigating the complex maze-like space station to escape while simultaneously confronting the manipulations of the psychotic AI SHODAN, who has assumed divine powers after gaining control over the station.
