2025 was a fantastic year for fans of shooting games. We saw the release of both Battlefield 6 and a Battlefield battle royale title, alongside Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Arc Raiders, a new extraction shooter, also became very popular. Now, 2026 is building on that momentum, and one upcoming tactical shooter has announced when it will be available. Players will have a chance to try the game before its official launch in a closed beta.
The game Ascendant is launching early next year, and the developers at PlayFusion are running another closed beta test from December 13th to 14th. This test is only for PC players and will be short-lived, allowing the team to carefully check the game’s servers and quickly fix any problems that arise.

Ascendant is a fast-paced, team-based shooter where you’ll face unpredictable battles and constantly changing goals. The game takes place in a colorful but dangerous world transformed by a catastrophic event called the Cascade. This world is a unique blend of organic and technological elements, creating a hostile environment where almost everything poses a threat.
Okay, so each match throws you into a crazy free-for-all with four teams of three players each. We’re all fighting it out on a map that’s constantly changing – resource spots move, new dangers pop up, and enemy positions are never the same for long. The goal is to grab these rare things called biocores and get out alive, but it’s not easy. You really need to work with your team and decide if you want to go in guns blazing, lay some traps, or just use the chaos of other teams to your advantage. It’s a total scramble!
Matches can be dramatically changed by major events and threats, like missile strikes from towers, the Burrower – a creature that spawns swarms – and the Deathbringer, a heavily armed vehicle that collects resources while dealing massive damage. These events create both chances and risks, forcing players to think on their feet and adjust their strategies.
Beyond combat, Ascendant’s lobby is a lively social space where players can enjoy activities like duels, mini-games, and challenging platforming courses, as well as get ready for battle. The game offers a lot of ways to personalize your experience, with deep customization options for characters, equipment, and weapons. You can modify firearms with thousands of different parts, making each one feel unique and allowing you to tailor your playstyle to your preferences.
These days, simply having good gameplay isn’t enough for a shooter game to succeed. Developers are focusing more on how a game looks and feels, or adding unique features – like the portals in Splitgate. This helps a game feel special and get noticed in a crowded market. Modern shooter games are finding their niche by specializing in different subgenres.
