Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie was first announced in 2020, but it’s been a slow process. Last year, Kathleen Kennedy, who was then president of Lucasfilm, jokingly said Waititi works at his own pace, admitting the script was taking time. Now that Kennedy has stepped down and been replaced by co-presidents Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan, she’s shared good news about several upcoming Star Wars films, including that Waititi has finally completed his script.
Taika Waititi is currently promoting his new comedy, Fing!, and spoke with Variety about his work on the upcoming Star Wars script. He explained that he’s aiming to capture the same playful spirit as the original Star Wars trilogy, balancing high stakes and serious moments with plenty of humor.

We’ll Have To Wait & See Whether Waititi’s Film Is a Priority for Lucasfilm

Taika Waititi is known for working on big franchises like Star Wars and Marvel. His film Thor: Ragnarok was a hit and revitalized the Thor series, but Thor: Love & Thunder wasn’t as successful. Reports indicate his Star Wars script shares a similar playful and humorous style with those Marvel movies. While Waititi’s popularity has dipped slightly since he started writing the script in 2020, he remains a highly respected and talented writer and director.
Kathleen Kennedy is stepping down from her leadership role at Lucasfilm and with Star Wars, though she’ll remain a producer on The Mandalorian and Grogu and Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter. Now, Dave Filoni and the studio president will decide if the planned film moves forward, based on how well it fits their vision for the future of Star Wars. It appears the studio started shifting its plans while preparing for Kennedy’s departure, and it’s a good sign that Taika Waititi is still working on his script.
It’s still uncertain what’s next for Star Wars movies. After the release of a currently planned film, Lucasfilm is focusing on a new trilogy written by Simon Kinberg, and many believe Daisy Ridley will return as Rey. If that happens, and if Taika Waititi’s film aligns with the overall creative vision led by Filoni and Brennan, the earliest we can expect it in theaters is 2029. Don’t anticipate any major announcements in the near future.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m really curious to hear what everyone thinks: if Dave Filoni could focus on just one new movie or show for theaters, what should it be? Let’s discuss it over at the ComicBook Forum – I’d love to hear your thoughts!
