Take-Two Attempted to Save Perfect Dark Reboot, Deal Crumbled After Rights Disagreement

The long, horrific tale of the Perfect Dark Reboot seems to have finally come to a close.

After a seven-year period marked by delays and disagreements, the contentious revival of Perfect Dark seemed on the verge of realization under the auspices of Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive. However, when talks about the intellectual property’s future hit a snag, large-scale layoffs followed.

Microsoft Layoffs Led to Perfect Dark Cancellation

Microsoft has been garnering attention due to ongoing reductions in staff, resulting in significant job losses. Approximately 4% of its global workforce – equivalent to more than 9,000 employees – have been let go by the corporation. This impact is particularly noticeable within certain sectors of the company, some of which are experiencing decline or even disappearing due to these layoffs.

Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming sent a memo to employees, informing them of the changes.

In order to ensure long-term victory for our gaming division and concentrate on key growth sectors, we plan to discontinue or scale back certain business aspects. Following Microsoft’s example, we aim to streamline management structures to boost agility and efficiency.

Due to the recent layoffs, several unannounced projects have been put on hold. Among them were some highly anticipated titles such as Everwild and a revival of Perfect Dark, which was planned by Microsoft.

Apart from Perfect Dark getting terminated due to these layoffs, the development studio responsible for it, known as The Initiative, was also discontinued.

Resounding Reverberations

Previously, during the development process, The Initiative encountered challenges with the game. To address this, they entered into a partnership with Crystal Dynamics, a game developer based in San Mateo. Working collaboratively, these two studios managed to revamp the game by switching it from The Initiative’s proprietary engine to Unreal Engine 5.

Despite efforts made, the project did not significantly improve, leading some developers to express frustration towards potential clients.

Following numerous years in development limbo and The Initiative’s shutdown, the surviving team found themselves unable to carry on the project without additional help, effectively halting the game’s progress completely.

The company that owns Crystal Dynamics, known as Embracer Group, was considering passing on the responsibility of managing the game to another publishing company, either in an attempt to rejuvenate it or to recover their initial investment costs.

Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, initiated discussions with Embracer about finalizing and launching a game. However, these talks didn’t progress much due to differences between the companies regarding long-term ownership of the remake of the Perfect Dark franchise. As a result, the deal didn’t materialize.

Subsequently, Crystal Dynamics initiated a round of layoffs alongside Microsoft. However, the exact number of affected employees remains undisclosed.

At present, the video game franchise Perfect Dark appears to have come to a halt, and it’s not expected to return any time in the near future.

A Disappointing Throughline

It appears that a consistent trend is evident: video game companies struggle to grasp what consumers truly desire from them. Without establishing a firm idea of their future direction, they’ll persist in their cycle of setbacks, continuously unveiling new ventures destined for obscurity.
