Tales Fans Are Fed Up as Hyped Anniversary Announcement Falls Flat

Tales is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, but fans are starting to feel let down because there haven’t been many exciting updates or announcements.

According to Automaton, the negative reaction is mainly coming from fans in Japan, and the latest announcement has received a lot of criticism on social media.

Bandai Namco had been teasing an upcoming announcement with ufotable, a well-known Japanese animation studio responsible for many popular anime and video game projects, including those in the Tales series.

We first heard about this news back in February, and the publisher has been building anticipation with regular updates ever since. As you can imagine, fans of the series were starting to get excited.

The recent announcement isn’t about a new Tales game or anime. Instead, animation studios ufotable and Production I.G. are collaborating to create 188 original illustrations to commemorate the Tales series’ 30th anniversary.

We think this sounds exciting, but fans are upset because of how the announcement was made and the excessive build-up beforehand. It’s been heavily promoted for months, and that’s the core of the issue.

We think this letdown is connected to the unusual year Tales has been having.

It’s easy to see why you might have missed it, but Tales of Berseria Remastered came out around the end of February. The re-release didn’t generate much buzz, and many fans felt a remaster wasn’t really needed.

The announcement came only a month after the release of Tales of Xillia Remastered, which made fans feel even more discouraged. Many expected a remaster of Tales of Xillia 2 to be announced next, but Bandai Namco’s decisions seem random, and that’s frustrating for players.

There’s still a lot of time before 2026, but the publisher needs to be more thoughtful about how they communicate with their loyal fans. Hopefully, the next announcement will be better received.
