Talking Point: Will PlayStation’s Mobile Push Be a Success or a Flop?

It was expected, but PlayStation is finally starting to make progress with its mobile games.

PlayStation has been working for several years to grow its mobile gaming division, PS Studios. Recent announcements show that this investment is finally starting to pay off, and we’re beginning to see the results.

It all fits into the company’s strategy of IP expansion beyond the PlayStation platform itself.

We’ve seen a growing trend of adapting popular PlayStation games like Uncharted, The Last of Us, and Gran Turismo into movies and TV shows, which helps introduce these well-known stories to a wider audience.

Bringing games to PC is a key focus, with plans to release many titles on platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store to reach more players.

Ultimately, this success is linked to PlayStation, and it’s likely a major reason the PS5 has become Sony’s second best-selling console in the US, surpassed only by the PlayStation 2.

Launching games on mobile devices is a key area Sony hasn’t fully explored yet, but it could be a significant opportunity.

Things are about to get a lot more interesting for mobile gamers! Two big, new games developed directly by PlayStation are on the way: Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble and Horizon Steel Frontiers.

As a fan, I’d describe it as a really fun multiplayer action game where you battle it out with other players in different modes. You get better as you play by upgrading your weapons and earning cool rewards!

This game is a multiplayer online experience where players team up to hunt robotic creatures in a previously unexplored region of the Horizon universe.

These two games each take the basic ideas of the original series in a slightly new direction, but they feel well-made and fit naturally within that world.

The proof is in the playing, of course, but hopefully they both find an audience.

Ultimately, the goal is to let more people enjoy these game franchises, and mobile gaming offers Sony a huge, currently unused, chance to reach them.

Smartphones are far more popular than gaming consoles, reaching billions globally and generating the most revenue in the gaming industry. It would be a mistake for Sony to ignore mobile gaming.

Okay, so this company has tried mobile gaming a couple of times before – I remember Ultimate Sackboy and WipEout Merge – but this new stuff they’re doing feels totally different. They actually seem really sure of themselves this time around, which is awesome!

The idea is to introduce players to the worlds of Ratchet & Clank and Horizon, encouraging them to play more games from those series. This would then lead them to purchase a PS5 or PC console to enjoy Sony’s full library of high-quality games.

Horizon Steel Frontiers has caused some discussion, as it’s launching on both mobile devices and PC, leaving PlayStation 5 fans wondering if it will ever come to their console.

It’s logical for PlayStation to expand its popular game series to other platforms, but some players are puzzled that these games aren’t also available on the PS5.

I’m guessing the big plan is to eventually bring all their popular mobile games over to consoles, but it’s super early days yet. I’m really hoping we get a clearer picture of what PlayStation is up to as these games actually start coming out. It’ll be interesting to see how it all unfolds!

This decision is a logical step for the company and something we’ve been working towards, but more importantly, how are you feeling about it?
