Taron Egerton has been widely suggested by fans as a potential Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, yet the actor doesn’t seem keen on taking the role. During an interview on the podcast “Happy Sad Confused,” when asked about persistent rumors linking him to playing the legendary mutant character, Egerton admitted that there was once a time he would have been eager for the part, but his viewpoint has changed now. He feels that Hugh Jackman set a high standard, and also doesn’t want additional spotlight on himself.
In simpler terms, Egerton admitted that when the gossip about the role first began, he found the idea appealing. However, nothing ever materialized beyond rumors. Moreover, Jackman reprised his role, which is inseparable from the character. If they were to remake it, there would be big shoes to fill. To be honest, I’m not sure I’d want that level of attention on me. I enjoy acting and filmmaking, but I’m content with the current level of fame where I might get asked for a selfie a couple times daily. I’m unsure if I could handle more than that.
Lately, Egerton has expressed views comparable to those about potentially portraying James Bond, acknowledging that being associated with a significant franchise is a substantial responsibility. Currently, he appears to prioritize seeking less mainstream roles that stimulate his creative growth over accepting another blockbuster offer. It’s worth mentioning that Egerton previously gained prominence as the lead in the Kingsman series. Previously, he found the conjecture about playing Bond or Wolverine to be both “complimentary” and “irritating.
Presently, Marvel Studios is working on a new version of the X-Men story, but it’s unlikely this project will hit the big screen for a couple more years. At this point, no actors have been chosen for the film. To keep expenses manageable, they plan to assemble a group of relatively inexperienced performers. Before the reboot takes flight, some actors from Fox’s X-Men movie franchise will appear again in Avengers: Doomsday. However, Jackman, who made a comeback in last summer’s Deadpool and Wolverine film, won’t be part of the Doomsday cast.
For a long time, viewers have envisioned Egerton as Wolverine, so it might be disheartening for some to learn he’s not keen on the part. However, his decision is reasonable considering that a role in the MCU could be just as demanding, if not more so, than playing James Bond. Unlike Bond films which come out every few years, Marvel releases numerous titles annually and often requires actors to sign multi-picture contracts. Given that X-Men is expected to be central in the MCU post-Avengers: Secret Wars, it’s plausible that a character like Wolverine will play a significant role in Marvel’s upcoming cinematic storyline. With mutants anticipated to appear not just in X-Men films, but also in potential crossovers, taking on Wolverine now could limit Egerton’s opportunities for other projects.
Egerton is stepping aside, but Marvel might not need to search too hard for another fan-adored character who could step into the role of Wolverine. Dafne Keen’s Laura/X-23 enjoys wide popularity, and she made quite an impression when she returned in Deadpool & Wolverine. Keen has expressed interest in revisiting Laura in future projects, making it feasible to bring her into the MCU’s X-Men films. This way, Marvel could further develop Laura as a captivating character without having to worry about finding a replacement for Jackman. Given Laura’s experiences in Logan and Deadpool & Wolverine, she could serve as a mentor to a new group of mutants.
