HBO has ordered a second season of its hit crime drama, Task, starring Mark Ruffalo and Tom Pelphrey. Praised as one of the best new shows of 2025, Task centers around FBI agent Tom Brandis in Philadelphia, who is investigating a string of brutal crimes. When a robbery turns deadly with a kidnapping involved, Brandis assembles a team to uncover the truth behind the attacks committed by a captivating thief.
Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed a second season of the drama. HBO CEO Casey Bloys announced the renewal during a recent press event, adding that Brad Ingelsby, the show’s creator, will be back as showrunner. Ingelsby, known for his work on the popular HBO series Mare of Easttown, is eager to continue telling the story of Brandis and the remaining members of his crime-fighting team.
We’re incredibly grateful for HBO’s consistent support of Task, starting with the initial script, continuing through production, and especially with their fantastic rollout of the first season. They’ve been a truly exceptional creative partner. Everyone on the Task team – the cast and crew – is thrilled and honored to be starting work on a second season.
Francesca Orsi, head of HBO Drama Series and Films, announced the show’s renewal and highly praised creator Brad Ingelsby. She said they recognized the show’s potential even before it premiered, but were thrilled to see how enthusiastically audiences connected with it each week. Orsi noted that Ingelsby is exceptionally talented at combining realistic, character-driven stories with exciting and complex plots, and she’s confident the second season will be just as captivating.
‘Task’ Is One of the Year’s Best Crime Shows – And the Perfect Weekend Binge

HBO
If you want to get caught up before Season 2 comes out, the first season of Task is a great choice for a weekend binge – it’s one of the few streaming shows that truly delivers. It only has seven one-hour episodes, all available on HBO Max. Task Season 1 is part of a strong lineup of shows coming to HBO in 2025, alongside new seasons of The Last of Us, The White Lotus, the first season of The Pitt, and It: Welcome to Derry.
The first season of Task has been very well-received by critics, earning a 96% score and a “Certified Fresh” label on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers give it a 74% rating. Sophie Butcher from Empire noted that while the show’s premise isn’t new, its strong characters, thoughtful writing, and emotional depth make it stand out. Erik Kain of Forbes called it “the best thing on TV at the moment,” praising its gripping plot and complex, relatable characters. However, Lucy Mangan in The Guardian offered a contrasting view, finding the characters underdeveloped and the story ultimately dull, stating that the show doesn’t bring anything new to the genre.
