Taylor Sheridan’s new Western drama, Landman, is a huge success, breaking streaming records. Inspired by the Boomtown podcast, the show premiered on Paramount+ in November 2024. Landman follows a modern-day oil boom in West Texas and quickly became a popular topic on social media and among viewers.
The series benefited from a strong cast, including Academy Award winner Billy Bob Thornton and nominee Demi Moore, with Jon Hamm appearing in the first few episodes. The show’s mix of family drama and workplace mysteries quickly resonated with viewers, but it truly took off with the recent season two finale.

According to TheWrap, the season 2 finale of Landman, titled “Tragedy and Flies,” achieved record viewership for a Paramount+ original series. The episode, which premiered on January 18th, attracted 14.8 million viewers worldwide within its first two days. Paramount Global reports this represents a 70% increase compared to the audience for the season 1 finale.
Looking closely at the viewership numbers, the second season of the show continued its strong performance. The first nine episodes averaged 14.9 million views worldwide in their first week, a 58% jump from season one. This success has established Landman as Paramount+’s most popular series.
Record-breaking viewership is common for shows about oil, and the new series is no exception. Paramount announced it had the biggest premiere of any original show on Paramount+, surpassing the previous record held by 1923, another series created by the same writer.
The season finale, penned by Sheridan and directed by Stephen Kay, lays the groundwork for future storylines. Good news for those wondering what happens next after the cliffhanger ending of Landman season 2 – the show has been renewed, despite several characters’ uncertain fates.
Beyond simply getting renewed – which was expected given its popularity – the show has consistently released new seasons. If season 3 of Landman arrives within the next year, it will be key to keeping its current audience engaged.
