Taylor Sheridan, a hugely popular creator in Hollywood, is bringing one of his most acclaimed Westerns to Netflix. While he’s known for successful crime thrillers like Mayor of Kingstown and Lioness, he first made a big impact with Westerns and continues to return to the genre.
Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone dramatically changed the landscape of Western television. He’s created three series within that world so far, with several more Western shows in the works – some connected to Yellowstone, and others that stand alone. Now, a Western film Sheridan made before Yellowstone is coming to Netflix, and it originally helped bring the genre back to life a decade ago.
Taylor Sheridan’s film, Hell or High Water, will be available to stream on Netflix in the U.S. starting February 1st. Sheridan, known as the creator of Yellowstone, wrote the movie, and David Mackenzie directed it. The film follows two brothers, Toby (Chris Pine) and Tanner Howard (Ben Foster), as they’re pursued by Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton (Jeff Bridges) after a series of bank robberies.
While not a blockbuster, the Western Hell or High Water was a financial success, becoming the highest-earning independent film of 2016 with $37.9 million in box office revenue. With a production budget of $12 million, the film surpassed its break-even point, needing between $24 and $30 million to do so.
Beyond its commercial success, Hell or High Water received widespread critical praise – a hallmark of director Taylor Sheridan’s work. The Western has an impressive 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating near-universal acclaim from critics. Audiences also loved the film, giving it an 89% approval rating.
After its release, Hell or High Water gained significant recognition from Hollywood award shows. It received four nominations at the 89th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Jeff Bridges, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. ScreenRant gave the movie a positive review, awarding it 8 out of 10.
Netflix is getting some great new shows from Taylor Sheridan. Fans can look forward to the crime thriller Mayor of Kingstown starring Jeremy Renner, which will be available in the U.S. in 2026. And starting in February, you’ll be able to stream the movie Hell or High Water on Netflix.
