The action thriller, originally released in 2021, is currently gaining popularity on streaming platforms. It’s based on the 1993 Tom Clancy novel of the same name and was co-written by Taylor Sheridan (known for Yellowstone) and Will Staples, with Stefano Sollima directing.
Despite not being a huge hit when it first streamed on Prime Video, Without Remorse is currently the sixth most-watched title on MGM+. It’s more popular than newer films like A Working Man and She Rides Shotgun, but less popular than the TV show From and movies like Roofman and Afterburn. The top spot is held by The Naked Gun.
Despite generally negative reviews, Without Remorse is finding success on streaming platforms. Critics haven’t been kind, giving the film a 45% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences seem to feel even more strongly, with a lower 41% rating on the Popcornmeter.
The movie stars Michael B. Jordan as John Kelly, a Navy SEAL who seeks revenge after his wife and fellow unit members are killed by Russian hitmen. While Jordan’s acting has been praised, critics found the film’s story and plot predictable and felt it didn’t offer anything new to the action genre.
Originally planned for cinemas, Without Remorse ended up premiering exclusively on streaming due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While critics weren’t very impressed, the film – featuring Guy Pearce, Jamie Bell, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Jacob Scipio – proved popular with Prime Video viewers.
The movie did well enough to get a sequel called Rainbow Six in the works. Jamie Foxx is likely to reprise his role, and Chad Stahelski, known for directing John Wick, will direct. However, there haven’t been many recent updates; Stahelski last mentioned the project was still being developed in December 2024.
Chad Stahelski is currently working on a new version of Highlander with Henry Cavill, and a fifth John Wick movie is also planned. This means a Rainbow Six film might be a long way off, or may not happen at all.
Even though it’s unclear if there will be a follow-up, more people are now watching Without Remorse. While it didn’t achieve the same level of success as Taylor Sheridan’s other films like Sicario (2015) and Wind River (2017), its recent popularity on streaming services indicates it might be worth another viewing.
