Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone Character Is Back, & Marshals Confirmed It

The new series, Marshals, has brought a familiar and often divisive character from Yellowstone back into the story. Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) mentions Travis Wheatley, played by Taylor Sheridan, in the Yellowstone spin-off. The show follows Kayce as he works with a team of US Marshals while still managing his duties at the East Camp ranch.

Following the conclusion of Yellowstone Season 5, Marshals continues the story of Kayce Dutton. Created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, the Yellowstone franchise also featured Sheridan himself as a horse trainer named Travis. Despite some controversy surrounding his role in Yellowstone‘s final season, actor Forrie J. Smith (Wheatley) is returning for Marshals.

Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone Character, Travis Wheatley, Returns In Marshals

Travis Wheatley is returning to the Yellowstone universe. In episode 5 of Marshals, Kayce mentions the horse trainer, and we learn about a dangerous incident involving Kayce’s son, Tate Dutton (Brecken Merrill). Tate almost gets seriously injured when a wild mustang – a horse Kayce planned to train for his wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille) – runs out of control.

Once they were done, John and Kayce headed off to sell the stallion. John Sr. felt the trip to Wyoming was a waste of time, but Kayce argued the incident with the buyer—the horse bit him—made it worthwhile. Finally, Kayce decided to call Travis, believing he could find a good home for the horse.

John Dutton and his family often exchanged horses with Travis, who works with the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas. Many viewers believe Kayce’s recent mention of Travis signals a plan to include him as a regular character in the show and its related spin-offs. Travis was last seen during the final scenes of Yellowstone.

The final season of Yellowstone was released in two parts, and the second half was overshadowed by John Dutton’s death. Season 5, Part 2 also felt slow at times, with some scenes dragging on without adding much to the story or emotional impact. Many viewers didn’t appreciate Travis’s frequent appearances and found his character’s actions frustrating.

What Travis Wheatley’s Return In Marshals Means For Yellowstone

As a huge fan of the Yellowstone universe, I was really excited to see Travis Wheatley back in Marshals! It feels like Sheridan is setting things up for his characters to play a big role in the next phase of the story. Even though the original Yellowstone is ending in December 2024, we’re going to keep following Kayce’s journey in his new CBS show, and there’s also a Dutton Ranch spinoff coming to Paramount+ with Beth and Rip – Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser – which I can’t wait for!

While it hasn’t been officially confirmed, there’s a possibility Travis Wheatley could appear in the Marshals series. Kayce’s attempt to negotiate with the horse trainer might bring him into contact with Travis, potentially allowing actor Forrie J. Smith to reprise his role. Despite the character’s controversial actions, many fans still enjoy Travis and remain supportive of Wheatley.

Even though the new series doesn’t come out until May 15th, it’s increasingly probable that Travis will be featured in Dutton Ranch. This is largely because he’s one of Rip’s best friends and someone Rip deeply trusts. The latest trailer also suggests they’ll be spending more time near Travis at the Four Sixes ranch.

Despite Kayce’s unsuccessful search for a buyer in Wyoming, Tate reconnects with Hayley Charlo, a friend from the Broken Rock Reservation who had been missing for four months. This reunion leads Kayce to join forces with Pete “Cal” Calvin and his team of US Marshals to investigate a human trafficking operation, which is resolved in Episode 6 on April 5th.
