Taylor Swift is giving a toast to her real friends.
It seems Swifties are very invested in figuring out the details – the “he said, she said” – and theories are already spreading quickly about her song “Cancelled!” from The Life of a Showgirl. Whether this is good or bad for Taylor Swift is another matter.
The tenth song on Swift’s latest album reveals she enjoys when “her friends cancel plans.” The chorus states, “I like ‘em cloaked in Gucci and in scandal / Like my whiskey sour / And poison thorny flowers / Welcome to my underworld / Where it gets quite dark / At least you know exactly who your friends are.”
As a huge fan, I’ve been following all the buzz, and it’s interesting to see everyone talking about who might have inspired this new song! While the artist is used to being in the spotlight, people are already guessing that Blake Lively and Brittany Mahomes – both of whom have dealt with public drama and feuds – might have played a part in creating this incredible track. It really feels like their experiences influenced the song’s energy!
One fan suggested on X that Taylor Swift’s recent actions were a response to those who told her to distance herself from Blake Lively, and that the song ‘cancelled’ is essentially a defense of herself. They wrote, “Taylor Swift saying fk everyone who said she had to drop Blake Lively,” and ‘cancelled’ basically being a defender song.”
Someone else responded to the pre-release speculation, clarifying that “Ruin the Friendship”-a song that’s actually about losing contact with and the eventual death of a high school friend-wasn’t about a supposed falling out between Swift and the Gossip Girl star.
A fan noticed that many people tried to claim the song ‘ruin the friendship’ was actually about Blake Lively (calling it a ‘sweet song about a boy’). However, the fan believes Taylor Swift was actually referencing Blake with the lyrics ‘Yeah it’s a good thing I like my friends cancelled, I salute you if you’re too much to handle.’, as posted on X.
Several people have pointed out that Taylor’s song lyrics might be about Blake Lively and her legal issues with It Ends With Us director and co-star Justin Baldoni.
One fan pointed out, “Blake Lively was the face of Gucci,” mentioning her 2014 collaboration with the fashion house and her Betty Buzz sparkling mixer line. They continued, “She also starred in the flower-themed movie and created her own line of sour drinks. It feels like people should be mentioning these accomplishments!”
Some people also suggested the song might be about Brittany, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs player Patrick Mahomes. She caused a stir when she openly expressed support for Donald Trump, and one person commented, “I think ‘cancelled’ is about Brittany Mahomes, not Blake.”
Of course, Taylor has plenty of pals the track could be referencing, as one fan pointed out.
Another fan commented, “It’s telling that when I thought about ‘cancelled’ people, Lena Dunham came to mind before Brittany Mahomes or Blake Lively.”

The first song on Taylor Swift‘s album, The Life of a Showgirl, alludes to Ophelia, a character in William Shakespeare‘s play Hamlet, who experiences a heartbreaking story.
The song suggests Taylor could have been overwhelmed by sadness if her significant other hadn’t rescued her. It states she “might’ve drowned in the melancholy” without their help.
“I heard you calling / On the megaphone,” Taylor sings. “You wanna see me all alone.”
The song’s words seem to reference Travis Kelce jokingly teasing Taylor on his New Heights podcast. He mentioned she didn’t meet up with him after her Eras Tour concerts, and that’s actually how their relationship started.
“I swore loyalty to me, myself and I,” the lyrics continue. “Right before you lit my sky up.”
Prior to meeting Travis, Taylor had recently ended things with Matty Healy. She had playfully described herself as one of the “independent girlies” back in July 2023.
But after Travis went to her concert in Kansas City that same month, sparks began to fly.
Even Taylor’s fiancé is participating in her tradition of hiding clues, as he hinted at lyrics from “The Fate of Ophelia” on Instagram back in July. He posted pictures with Taylor, writing, “Had some adventures this offseason,” and adding, “Kept it [100].”
How does this relate to Taylor’s song? It’s reflected in the lyrics: “You dug me out of my grave and saved my heart from the fate of Ophelia / Keep it one hundred.”
In the second song on the album, Taylor pays tribute to the iconic Elizabeth Taylor, referencing places the actress loved, including the Plaza Athénée in Paris and Musso & Frank’s in Los Angeles.
In the song, Taylor also compares herself to the Cleopatra actress. Similar to Taylor now, Elizabeth frequently appeared in the news for things like her relationships and her stunning clothes.
But, as Taylor notes in her song, “Oftentimes it doesn’t feel so glamorous to be me.”
In the cheerful song “Opalite,” which Travis had previously shared was his favorite from the Showgirl album, Taylor Swift alludes to the story of their relationship.
Having experienced a lot of heartbreak in past relationships, Taylor now seems to have found peace and tranquility with Travis – her current relationship feels calm and serene, like the gentle glow of opalite.
Taylor, Max Martin and Shellback are listed as the writers of Showgirl. However, the late George Michael is also credited on “Father Figure” because the song samples part of his 1987 song with the same title.
Taylor Swift received support from George’s team, who expressed their gratitude on Instagram on October 2nd, writing, “Thank you @taylorswift for including George in such a special moment.”
We’re now at track five on Showgirl, and this is typically where Taylor Swift places her most emotionally devastating songs on an album.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been really moved by Taylor’s song, “Eldest Daughter.” It beautifully captures the journey of life – all the ups and downs we experience – and the unwavering bond with those closest to us. Taylor, who Andrea Swift and Scott Swift welcomed into the world before also becoming parents to Austin Swift, really shows how we navigate everything *with* the people we love, and that’s something I think we can all relate to.
Oh my god, these lyrics? They just *get* me. It’s like, she’s saying, ‘I’m not just some mean girl,’ you know? And this isn’t about being overly aggressive, it’s deeper than that. She promises, ‘I’m never gonna let you down,’ and honestly, I feel that so hard! It’s like she’s saying she’ll always be there, ‘never leaving anyone behind.’ She acknowledges all the fake people – ‘
The sixth track on Showgirl recounts a story of wishing things had gone differently in a relationship that never really began. The lyrics evoke a feeling of longing and remembrance, with lines like, “Have fun, it’s prom / Wilted corsage dangles from my wrist / Over his shoulder I catch a glimpse / And see…You looking at me / And it was not an invitation / But as the 50 Cent song played / Should’ve kissed you anyway.”
Taylor Swift mentions her close friend Abigail Anderson in these sad lines about dealing with loss: “When I left school, I lost touch with you / Abigail called me with the upsetting news / Goodbye, and we’ll never understand why.”
“Actually Romantic” isn’t actually a love song, not exactly. Instead, it’s a reaction to someone-who isn’t named in the song-that Taylor says has talked about her a great deal.
Taylor sings, “I high-fived my ex, and then you said you were glad he stopped contacting me.” She continues, “You wrote me a song about how it makes you sick to see my face. / Some people might be offended / But it’s actually sweet.”
Although Taylor Swift doesn’t often share the inspiration behind her songs, many fans online think this one was influenced by Charli XCX. Charli opened for Taylor on the Reputation Tour and is also friends with Taylor’s former boyfriend, Matty, and his partner, Gabbriette Bechtel.
When Charli-whose husband is George Daniel, a member of the band The 1975-released her album brat in June 2024, people wondered if her song “Sympathy is a Knife” was a dig at Taylor Swift. But two months later, Taylor appeared to dismiss those rumors by publicly complimenting Charli’s work.
I’ve been a huge fan of Charli since I first heard ‘Stay Away’ back in 2011, and I told New York magazine just recently how much her music means to me. Honestly, her songwriting is just unreal – so creative and unique. She always manages to take a song in directions you’d never anticipate, and she’s been consistently amazing at that for over ten years now. It’s so inspiring to see that kind of dedication and hard work finally getting the recognition it deserves. I really love to see it!
TopMob News has reached out to reps for comment on the speculation and has not heard back.
On the very top of Taylor’s wish list? A forever with Travis. That includes starting a family.
“I just want you,” she sings. “Have a couple kids / Got the whole block looking like you.”
Taylor says that hoping for love by wishing on a star didn’t work for her in the past. However, now that she’s with Travis, she feels so secure that she doesn’t even need to knock on wood for good luck.
She sings, “Girls, I don’t need to catch the bouquet,” adding, “to know a tough time is coming.”
She proved to be correct. Taylor and Travis shared the news of their engagement in August 2025, following a two-year relationship.
The song also references New Heights, which Taylor says is where their relationship began.
On track 10, Taylor is mentoring someone who has faced public backlash – a situation she understands well, having gone through it herself.
She told me, “Let’s go, because people will flee when they spot us.” She then added, “Something ominous is approaching / Luckily, my friends bailed / I prefer them mysterious, dressed in Gucci and surrounded by controversy.”
“Honey” truly lives up to its name! In the 11th song on the album, Taylor shares that Travis has completely changed the meaning of certain words for her. Where words like “honey” and “sweetheart” used to bring up unpleasant memories, she now associates them with Travis.
Taylor softly sings, “Let me chase away your sadness / Whenever you call me ‘honey’.” She continues, “Think warm summer drinks and rosy sunsets / You’re welcome to call me ‘honey’ if you feel like it / Because I’m the person you desire.”
In fact, Travis did call Taylor “sweetie” during her debut appearance on New Heights in August.
For her final act, Taylor teamed up with friend Sabrina Carpenter.
The song connects with “Elizabeth Taylor,” offering a peek into the life of a showgirl. Although it appears dazzling, everything comes at a cost, and an experienced performer needs to make that clear to a rising star.
The song’s words create a vivid image: “She confessed, ‘I would give anything – even my soul – to experience a truly wonderful life, one that’s completely my own’ / But that’s not the reality for showgirls / They’re simply discarded and forgotten.”
Finally, having experienced what it’s like to be a showgirl, the performers come together for one last bow, saying, “That’s our show / We love you so much, goodnight!”
