Despite being popular with viewers, the Peacock streaming series Ted won’t be getting a third season. Creator Seth MacFarlane decided against continuing the show because of its high production costs. While the first season was a big success, leading Peacock to order a second, and that second season is also off to a good start, there are currently no plans for future episodes.
Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Ted, had mentioned there weren’t any plans for a third season. In a recent interview with The Wrap, he explained further, saying that Peacock and Universal felt the show was too costly to produce without cutting corners. He stated they told him, “The show is really expensive to produce and there’s no way to do it at a lower cost.” MacFarlane took this to mean the show wouldn’t continue, so he crafted the final scenes of Season 2 as if it were the end of the series.
Seth MacFarlane Explains Why Ted Won’t Return for Season 3
Seth MacFarlane explained that Peacock and Universal repeatedly told him the show was costly to make and couldn’t be done for less. He responded by writing a final scene where Max Burkholder’s character walks into a gym, hinting at his transformation into Mark Wahlberg in the original Ted movie. This ending definitively signaled the prequel series was meant to conclude there.
According to creator Seth MacFarlane, continuing the show Ted after the second season presents a challenge. While he acknowledges that finding a way to continue isn’t impossible, it would likely require some complicated storytelling. As of now, there are no concrete plans for a third season, making its renewal seem unlikely.
Ted Will Continue With New Animated Series

Although it’s disappointing that Ted won’t be continuing as a live-action show, the franchise isn’t over. The high cost of making the live-action series also prevented a third movie from happening. Instead, Seth MacFarlane is developing an animated series, which he anticipates will be released between 2026 and 2027. He explained to ComicBook that animation makes it simpler to coordinate everyone’s schedules.
The animated series gave us the opportunity to cast big names like Mark Wahlberg and Amanda Seyfried, who are usually too busy with film projects to appear in a live-action TV show. Because recording voiceovers for just an hour at a time fits more easily into their schedules, we were able to continue the story after the second movie ended, as the creator explained.
