Fans of Ted Lasso can expect the fourth and final season this summer, bringing back familiar faces like Roy Kent. While updates about the new season have been shared, a small but interesting shift in Ted’s coaching team seems to have gone unnoticed.
Brett Goldstein will be back as Roy Kent, but he won’t be an assistant coach with Ted Lasso anymore. A new character is taking his place on the coaching team. This means Roy Kent will likely have a smaller role in the upcoming season of Ted Lasso, and we’ve probably seen his most important moments already.
Roy Kent, a character from Ted Lasso, is loosely based on the real-life footballer Roy Keane. The show drew inspiration from Keane for Roy’s name, his famously intense personality, and his reputation as a long-time team captain. When Roy steps down as assistant coach, he’ll leave a significant gap on the sidelines during Richmond’s women’s games.
Ted Lasso Has Quietly Replaced Roy Kent As Ted’s Assistant Coach
Roy Kent is back for season 4 of Ted Lasso, but he won’t be an assistant coach alongside Ted this time. Photos from the new season show that another coach has taken on that role and will be assisting Ted from the sidelines.
It makes sense that Roy Kent is still the manager of AFC Richmond’s men’s team, considering he took the position when Ted Lasso went back to the US at the end of last season. While Brett Goldstein is returning for season 4, the show will mainly follow the AFC Richmond women’s team, so Roy Kent won’t be a major focus.
Tanya Reynolds Will Play Ted’s New Assistant In Season 4
The first images from season 4 of Ted Lasso show Tanya Reynolds, known for Sex Education, joining the cast as Ted’s new assistant coach. The photos feature Reynolds standing with Jason Sudeikis as the team practices on the field.
Similar to Roy Kent before her, it seems Reynolds’ character will be a demanding coach, as she doesn’t appear very pleased with what she’s seeing. The actress is also known for her roles as Lily Iglehart in Sex Education, and in the 2020 film Emma (directed by Autumn Wilde), as well as the period comedy series The Decameron.
What Replacing Roy Kent Means For Ted Lasso
Season four of Ted Lasso will focus on Ted coaching the AFC Richmond women’s team, so Tanya Richards, as his assistant coach, is expected to be a central character this season.
I’m a little sad to hear Brett Goldstein, who plays Roy Kent, won’t be as central to the story this season, now that the focus is shifting away from the Richmond men’s team. I’m really curious to see if there’s going to be some tension – maybe even a rivalry – between Roy and whoever steps in as Ted’s new assistant. It’ll be fascinating to watch Ted navigate this new phase in his life as Ted Lasso returns!
