The prequel series to Seth MacFarlane’s movie Ted was surprisingly excellent. The original Ted film, released in 2012, marked MacFarlane’s first time directing a feature film. It’s a funny story about a man and his talking teddy bear, brought to life by a childhood wish. The movie was a huge hit, becoming one of the most successful comedies ever – even more popular than The Hangover.
Despite a disappointing performance and negative reviews for Ted 2 three years after the original, the franchise appeared to be finished. However, almost ten years later, Peacock unexpectedly brought Ted back as a streaming series, likely hoping to attract more subscribers. Surprisingly, the show proved to be a stronger offering than a potential Ted 3 movie might have been.
Seth MacFarlane’s Ted Prequel Show Was Even Funnier Than The Movies
So, the new Ted movies didn’t follow up on the original with a grown-up John. Instead, they went back in time to his high school years in the ’90s! It’s hilarious watching Ted try to navigate school with John, and they definitely get into some crazy trouble as they’re growing up. Plus, the family stuff is really funny too – John’s dad is super conservative, but his cousin Blaire, who lives with them, is totally the opposite. It’s kind of like a new take on All in the Family, with those clashing viewpoints.
The cast of Ted is consistently strong. Seth MacFarlane is excellent as Ted, and he’s supported by a charming and relatable group of characters. Max Burkholder perfectly portrays John’s kind and innocent nature, while Scott Grimes (from American Dad!) is reliably funny as the brash and opinionated Matty. Alanna Ubach is ideal as Matty’s gentle wife, Suze, and Giorgia Whigham skillfully plays Blaire, the voice of reason amidst the chaos.
The Writing In The Ted Series Feels Like Vintage Family Guy
The writing is one of the best parts of the Ted series. It really captures the feel of classic Family Guy – the unpredictable, rambling stories, the silly, out-of-nowhere jokes, and the dedication to seeing a joke through. It’s a great reminder of how good Family Guy used to be when Seth MacFarlane was more involved.
Ted Season 2 Premieres Soon
When Ted first came out in 2024, it was surprisingly popular for Peacock, so the streaming service quickly ordered another season. Because the show features a completely computer-generated main character, it takes much longer to make than most sitcoms, and fans have been waiting a couple of years for the new season.
Season 2 of Ted is coming out on March 5th, making now a great time to revisit the show! You can watch all of season 1 before the new episodes arrive.
