Teen Mom’s Kailyn Lowry’s Son Rio Needs Surgery After Misdiagnosis

Kailyn Lowry is detailing a nightmare experience as a mother.

The reality TV personality and mother of Elliott (15), Lincoln (11), Lux (7), Creed (4), Rio (2), as well as twins Verse and Valley (21 months) has recently revealed that her 2-year-old son will undergo a medical procedure to remove a puzzling growth on his abdomen.

Kailyn, 33, stated during their July 21 podcast episode, titled Coffee Convos, with Lindsie Chrisley, “I initially believed it was a small inguinal issue near his navel.” She added that the initial suspicion arose from her son’s swim lessons, as he needed to flip over and float on his back. This continuous movement, she speculated, might have caused the formation of a lump resembling a hernia.

Kailyn, who has Rio and her twins with her former fiance Elijah Scott, expressed concern as a hernia she suspected had been confirmed by a doctor, but remained unresolved even after multiple months.

For about two weeks now, she’s pointed out a bulge from his stomach area, she said. So, she messaged Elijah, saying something like, “I think we need to call the pediatrician and arrange an appointment for him because it seems to be worse than it was last year.

Kailyn pointed out that upon their latest visit, the pediatrician quickly assured her that Rio’s lump wasn’t a hernia as initially suspected, and arranged for an ultrasound instead.

Later, when the ultrasound results arrived, she remembered them saying, “This certainly isn’t a hernia,” instead. The follow-up reports hinted at a potential diagnosis of a neoplasia, or tumor. As a mother, hearing this news made her feelings sink deeply.

During a conversation, Kailyn stressed to her audience the importance of avoiding a similar error she had made in the past. Her son will be receiving the necessary care he requires.

She put it simply: ‘My point is, always investigate any health concerns thoroughly.’ It turned out that what she initially suspected as a hernia was not.

Indeed, Kailyn expressed disappointment in putting her faith in one doctor’s opinion.

She said, ‘I was informed that the situation would sort itself out without my intervention, and I didn’t seek another viewpoint.’ Later on, she admitted to feeling mom guilt, along with the realization that the possibility of a tumor couldn’t be dismissed, which is causing her great concern.

Furthermore, even though Kailyn feels reassured about her son’s well-being, she decided to relay the incident as a “warning” to her followers, expressing her sentiments with, “Don’t you think it’s terrifying?

Kailyn Lowry had her first child, Isaac Elliott Rivera, with her high school sweetheart Jo Rivera when she was only 17 years old. This momentous event took place on January 18, 2010.

Even though they parted ways a year later, their former selves have found a harmonious coparenting routine. As Kailyn put it on X after attending Jo and his current spouse Vee Rivera’s 2018 wedding, “We’ve made significant progress since we were 18.” She expressed that she couldn’t wish for a better stepmother.

In her Instagram post on his 13th birthday, she expressed that while they have grown up side by side, he appears to be more mature than her in certain aspects. She fondly referred to this devoted fan of Olivia Rodrigo, who is also a musician and basketball player, as being thoughtful, intelligent, humorous (sometimes even a bit mischievous). The Delaware State graduate highlighted his kind-heartedness in her praise for him.

She expressed that it’s his ability to defy societal conventions which truly motivates her. Given his inquisitive and receptive nature, he’s capable of shaping his own beliefs and perspectives.

Elliott, who revealed his decision to use his middle name instead of his given name on the podcast “Barely Famous” with his mom in June 2025, and also disclosed that he is gay, was praised by Kailyn for embracing people as they are without any expectations. She expressed that more individuals should emulate his approach.

Lincoln Marshall, son of Javi Marroquin (former Teen Mom 2 star), joined the team on November 16, 2013. This was approximately a year following Javi’s wedding ceremony.

In the 2022 episode of her “Barely Famous” podcast, Kailyn noted that the tween was passionate about sports. He frequently switches between basketball and football matches, taking up a considerable amount of his time. To celebrate his 10th birthday, he hosted an NBA-themed party, honoring his favorite player, none other than Allen Iverson.

It’s not surprising at all that when it was time to pick a name for his youngest brother, Iverson (which is Lincoln’s suggestion), was on the list since he’s such a big basketball enthusiast. Kailyn shared this detail in a TikTok video posted in February 2024.

In a heartfelt birthday tribute penned in 2022, she expressed that knowing Lincoln was synonymous with loving him. She described him as a dedicated, intelligent, good-looking individual, and above all, an exceptional brother.

Lux Russell Lowry appreciates football, wrestling, puzzle-solving with Rubik’s Cubes, and the music of Michael Jackson among his favorite pastimes.

As a devoted parent, I welcomed my first child, Lux, into the world on August 5, 2017, with my former partner, Chris Lopez. Despite our relationship having its ups and downs over the years, as of 2020, we’ve found ourselves in a communication standstill. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that things will improve with time, but I don’t have any grand expectations. I choose to express only positive sentiments, hoping for the best for our children and their future, whatever it may hold.

Regardless of the direction Lux takes, he’s moving swiftly towards his destination. In her post commemorating his sixth birthday with a WWE-styled party, Kailyn wrote, “Lux has been here in a flash and keeps us guessing every day since.” She added, “I adore this little lion cub so much!

Prior to the birth of Creed Romello Lowry-Lopez on July 30, 2020, Kailyn found herself grappling with a significant dilemma. She confided to TopMob News shortly after his birth that she had concealed her pregnancy for an extended period because she was uncertain about her future plans – whether to keep the baby or not. “That was a very heavy burden for me, and I was truly struggling during that time,” she shared.

Despite the turbulent nature of her connection with Chris, Creed’s father, a single look at the ultrasound image confirmed her choice.

Just as his elder siblings, who were eager and affectionate towards the baby according to Kailyn’s words to TopMob, the podcaster fell in love with the baby from the very first day.

On his third birthday, as he celebrated alongside Lux in a WWE extravaganza, I found myself at a loss for words to express the profound affection I harbor for this dynamic spark. In person, I’ll let my emotions run wild! Here’s to “CREED,” “Romello,” “Mello,” “Romey,” “Rome,” and “Biggie” or “Bigs,” my little firecracker!

Kailyn shared with People that she wanted to share the story of her fifth child, Rio, on her own accord and timing, rather than immediately after his birth in November 2022.

Despite having a challenging start to life, with a stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) due to breathing problems and fluid in his lungs, he’s proven to be an exceptional baby.

First-time father Elijah Scott is worth acknowledging too. Regarding her ex-fiancé, she shared that the experience has been distinct from other relationships and fathers of their children. “He works with concrete and can get quite messy at his job, but he’s also a dedicated family man,” she said. “He has strong ties with both his own family and ours, making him an excellent partner for me. I believe our partnership is well-suited.

It seems that Kailyn found her fifth child easier to handle than her fourth one, possibly because number four was quite spicy. However, she adores number five, stating that he is simply amazing – if all her children were like him, she would consider having ten more.

Cut to…

Kailyn officially stepped into motherhood of two daughters, Verse and Valley, in late October 2023, marking the beginning of her girl mom phase, as she welcomed them with her partner Elijah for the second and third time.

Kailyn, who grew up in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley (nicknamed the same), had a more extended stay at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) compared to her brother due to some difficulties with feeding.

On the January 2024 episode of Barely Famous, Kailyn shared that she had never encountered a baby who didn’t wake up to eat or display signs of hunger in her lifetime. This particular baby would simply sleep through feedings. She didn’t exhibit any feeding cues, and when attempts were made to feed her with a bottle, she wouldn’t accept it.

Despite Kailyn still being concerned about the twins’ relationship following their prolonged split (she’s working on reconnecting them to restore their bond to its previous state), she’s overjoyed that her family is now complete.

She expressed feelings of gratitude, appreciation, contentment, joy, and fulfillment. This happiness has led us to expand our home. We consider ourselves incredibly fortunate. They are wonderful, well-behaved infants.
