For decades, Greg Cipes has been the voice of Beast Boy in popular DC shows like *Teen Titans Go*, the original *Teen Titans*, and *Young Justice*. Recently, fans were saddened to learn he was let go from the role after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. In a new interview, Cipes discusses his history with the character, the circumstances of his departure, and his ongoing battle with the disease.
In an interview with Cartoon Base, Greg Cipes expressed shock and disappointment over being let go from *Teen Titans*. He explained that after contributing to the successful ninth season, he expected to return for season ten, having voiced Beast Boy for over 400 episodes. He felt healthy after undergoing Parkinson’s treatments and was prepared to continue, but was unexpectedly fired and then asked to audition for the same role he’d played for 23 years.
“An Impersonator is Never Gonna do Beast Boy Justice”
Greg Cipes recently spoke out about the changes to his role as Beast Boy, expressing his disappointment that another actor will be imitating his voice and mannerisms. He feels it’s disrespectful to have his unique performance, built over years of developing the character, replaced with an impersonation. Cipes believes this approach won’t do Beast Boy justice and diminishes the work he put into creating an iconic character. Given his contributions to the show’s success and his ongoing battle with Parkinson’s disease, he had hoped for more understanding and respect.
You know, it’s been really tough hearing about the possibility of someone else taking over as Beast Boy. During a recent interview, I shared that Warner Bros. is actually having someone *study* my voice, trying to copy how I deliver my lines – my rhythm, my energy, even my sense of humor. Honestly, it feels a little off because those things come from *me*, and I’m worried fans will notice it just doesn’t feel genuine. It’s frustrating because I’m still fully capable of playing Beast Boy, even with Parkinson’s! I might just need a little extra time in the recording booth now and then to get the lines perfect. The whole cast really rallied around me, fighting hard to convince WB that replacing me with an impersonator wasn’t the right move. We have such a special chemistry as a group, and that’s a huge part of what made the show – and the team – so beloved. It’s our connection and the love we share that really shines through.
