Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #14 Delivers Classic Heart and Big Action (And The Ujigami Era Is Just Beginning)

With issue #13, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles started a fresh storyline and a dangerous new villain. But the story really gains momentum in issue #14. This issue takes the Ujigami arc in surprising directions and beautifully shows how much each Turtle has grown, as well as how their bond as brothers has strengthened. If you were worried the series might lose steam after recent changes, you can rest assured it hasn’t.

The latest issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (#13) shocked fans by revealing Splinter was the one behind the Ujigami mask. Now, the story focuses on explaining why Splinter did this and what his goals are, and it delivers on that promise. Writer Gene Luen Yang doesn’t stop there, though; he adds depth by showing how each of the Turtles reacts to the news, and ends with a surprising twist that completely changes where the story is headed.

Ujigami’s choices force the Turtles to work with—and even defend—some of their most dangerous enemies. This creates great opportunities for character development, with writer Yang skillfully revealing surprising and heartwarming moments from each Turtle, particularly Raphael and Donatello. Yang consistently makes the Turtles feel both familiar and extraordinary, and this issue is no exception.

It’s impossible to discuss Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #14 without highlighting the incredible art by Freddie E. Williams II, Andrew Dalhouse, and Shawn Lee. They consistently deliver stunning pages throughout the issue. The action is exciting and feels very real, constantly surprising the reader. The artists also do a fantastic job showing the Turtles’ emotions and how past experiences shape their present feelings, particularly with Leonardo and Donatello.

This issue powerfully conveys the emotional weight on Leonardo and Donatello, making their feelings palpable to the reader. The quiet, intense scenes with Splinter are always compelling, and they’re perfectly balanced by exciting, action-packed fights that still reveal important details about the characters and the overall plot. The final scene is especially impactful, showing a complex mix of emotions on each character’s face – relief, confusion, sadness, and joy – and for a brief moment, you feel like you truly understand what they’re all going through. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #14 remains essential reading for fans, and it keeps improving with each issue.
