The original PlayStation debut of the Tekken series sparked immense popularity that continues to this day, and its spin-offs, specifically Tekken Tag Tournament and its sequel, have consistently been well-received by fans. Frequently, supporters of the franchise inquire about a potential third installment of the Tekken Tag Tournament series from Bandai Namco and series producer Katsuhiro Harada. However, in an interview with Destructoid, Harada revealed that a solo Tag Tournament game is currently considered extremely unlikely.
Instead, Harada discussed the possibility that the spin-off series could make a comeback as a game mode in either the upcoming game, Tekken 8, or a future mainline sequel like Tekken 9. According to him, “Tag” has been something he’s been considering more recently and believes it would be best suited as a mode within any future Tekken game. This was conveyed through a translator.
Essentially, Harada is expressing uncertainty about whether there’s still demand for a standalone Tekken Tag Tournament 3 in today’s market. In simpler terms, he suggests that if they start working on it now, the game might be released when tag fighters as a sub-genre are no longer trendy.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share some insights I picked up recently. Harada hinted that if another solo installment of the beloved Tekken Tag Tournament were to materialize, it would likely be handled by a fresh batch of game developers. He suggested that such an endeavor might not fall within his professional lifetime.
As a passionate enthusiast, I’d like to share some insights about the complexity of creating a 3D fighter compared to its 2D counterpart. You see, a 3D fighter requires significantly more moves and intricate design work to ensure seamless gameplay. The challenge lies in the additional dimensions that need to be considered when coding and designing characters’ actions, environments, and interactions.
While it’s an exciting prospect, bringing a 3D fighter to life might not happen during my professional career. It’s something that future generations of developers will likely tackle, as they continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in gaming.
It’s worth noting that Harada mentioned a game thought to be lost in time – Tekken X Street Fighter. Originally, Bandai Namco was planning to release this as a sequel to Capcom’s Street Fighter X Tekken from 2012. However, although the game was confirmed to be under development, it appeared that the project had been silently shelved.
Harada remarked, “It’s unclear if Tekken X Street Fighter actually exists.” He further added, “You see, it depends on the expectations of the public. Nevertheless, I’d love to share what we’ve already developed with them. That would be fantastic! If we could manage that, it would be wonderful. We were 30% through development, so here’s hoping!
It’s interesting to point out that Tekken 7 had a bit of a collaboration with the Street Fighter series by featuring Akuma as a key character in its lineup. Since then, the Tekken universe, particularly Tekken 8, has incorporated characters from various other franchises into their roster, including Fatal Fury and Final Fantasy.
Regarding Tekken Tag Tournament, it’s important to note that the latest installment in the series came out way back in 2011 on PS3, Xbox 360, and later on Wii U. In the interim, why not take a look at our review for the upcoming Tekken 8. Additionally, here are some details about new characters joining the roster of Tekken 8 – Armor King and Miary Zo.
