Daniil Medvedev is serving up some drama at this year’s US Open.
In the electrifying atmosphere of August 24th, as I, Medvedev, found myself on the brink against Benjamin Bonzi in our first-round match, an unexpected intrusion by a photographer on court took me by surprise. This unforeseen event led Greg Allensworth, the chair umpire, to grant Bonzi another opportunity to serve first. This move ignited a tense exchange between us, a moment that added another layer of drama to our riveting match.
In fact, the victor of the 2021 U.S. Open tennis tournament became quite upset with the umpire who asked a photographer to leave and then announced that the player, Bonzi, would receive another serve due to the delay. This upset the player so much that he walked over to the chair to voice his dissatisfaction.
Medvedev exclaimed through a microphone that he wanted to return home, stating his discomfort with being there and mentioning that his payment was based on matches, not time spent.
What were Reilly Opelka’s remarks? In February, the ATP Tour penalized Opelka for labeling Allensworth as ‘the worst umpire on tour.’
After a six-minute interlude marked by disgruntled spectators booing, Bonzi returned to serve and went on to triumph against Medvedev in an exciting five-set battle.
Following his loss, Medvedev sat down near the court and repeatedly slammed his racket onto the ground and the bench with both hands.
After losing, Medvedev sat down beside the court and angrily pounded his racket into the ground and onto a bench multiple times using both hands.
Following the game, the tennis ace underscored that his forceful response stemmed from his conviction that the photographer’s intrusion wasn’t severe enough to necessitate replaying the point.
He clarified that he wasn’t angry at the photographer, but rather frustrated with the decision made. There was about a four-and-a-half second wait from the photographer, which he’s unsure if it’s significant enough to affect his first serve.

He went on to say, ‘I’ve grown quiet enough that if I were to speak, it would lead to significant trouble for me, so I choose not to speak.’ Everyone is aware of the topic I was discussing when I mentioned Reilly. Reilly faced severe fines due to this situation, and if I were to talk about it, I’d likely face similar penalties.
For his part, Bonzi didn’t let his opponent’s outburst stop him from celebrating his big win.
After the game, as reported by CNN Sports, the 29-year-old exclaimed, “That was quite unusual!” He might’ve gained some new supporters, but also possibly some new critics.
He also mentioned, “The atmosphere was electrifying!” He appreciated everyone who were jeering. He thanked them for their enthusiasm. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before. We held back for about five minutes before the decisive moment, and it was absolutely thrilling. The cacophony was incredible.
