Monica Seles is serving up an update on her health.

Three years ago, the former tennis champion disclosed that she was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis – an autoimmune disorder that leads to muscle weakness and double vision, as stated by the Mayo Clinic. She detailed the impact of this incurable condition on her physical health.

In a recent interview with the Associated Press on August 12, Seles, aged 51, shared that while engaging in playtime with children or family, she lost track of a ball. This incident led her to remark, “I thought I saw two balls,” and it was then that she realized these were symptoms she couldn’t disregard. This marked the beginning of an important journey for her.

Further issues persisted beyond her initial alarming symptoms. The nine-time Grand Slam singles champion found herself struggling with weakness in both her legs and arms, making everyday tasks like combing her hair incredibly challenging. As the condition worsened, she sought medical assistance.

Upon receiving my diagnosis, I was taken aback, exclaiming something akin to, “Really?!” Little did I know about this condition prior to being diagnosed. It’s here that I strongly wish there had been someone like myself who could bring attention to it earlier.

Currently, Seles is finding her voice that was necessary then. Interestingly, the former athlete who retired from tennis in 2008, aims to raise awareness for Myasthenia Gravis before the U.S. Open tournament kicks off on August 24 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

She shared that she needed a while to fully understand and discuss it, as it’s a challenging topic. She also mentioned that it significantly impacts her daily routine.

Upon waking up from the procedure, she was screaming due to pain as the operation had failed and her chances of survival were considered precarious. Thankfully, she is now fully recovered.

After addressing both her physical and mental health issues, Shailene is now feeling much better. She shared that, thankfully, her health problems eventually resolved themselves, and she is now in good health.
