Unexpectedly this year, the announcement of Terminator 2D: Destiny Unknown caught everyone’s attention. Amongst nostalgic games, it’s shaping up to be quite impressive, and the latest gameplay trailer only serves to reinforce this impression.
Exclusively on IGN, a four-minute gameplay clip is presented, with commentary from lead designer Mike Tucker, showcasing John Connor’s battles against Skynet in the future. Here it is for your viewing pleasure:
In the development of the game, Tucker frequently references several timeless action games from the past, such as Contra, Rolling Thunder, Shinobi, ESWAT, Elevator Action Returns, and Metal Slug, which have influenced its gameplay.
In this game, John Connor is among the three characters that you can control, with the ability to switch between them as the story progresses. John’s stages are reminiscent of fast-paced action levels, but he possesses unique abilities like throwing a powerful bomb at enemies, performing a dodge roll for evasion, and finding specific spots to take cover.
As a thrilled gamer, I can tell you that Tucker reveals the main part of this game will involve high-octane run-and-gun stages, but to keep things fresh, there are diverse levels sprinkled throughout, such as vehicle-centric segments and an intense brawl set in a biker bar.
In contrast to John’s stages being situated in future wars, Sarah Connor’s levels occur during the 90s as she initiates the battle against Cyberdyne. Rather than using John’s pipe bomb, Sarah opts for close-combat attacks, and instead of a dodge roll, she glides across the ground.
It appears that certain stages might include numerous bosses to defeat, including a massive Centurion mech.
It seems that several stages may have many bosses to vanquish, among them is the colossal Centurion mech.
At the conclusion of the video, we catch fleeting peeks into different aspects of the game, featuring characters such as Sarah and the T-800 model.
Although it carries a resemblance to 16-bit era games, its pixel art and movement are undeniably superior to what technology permitted then, and it’s visually stunning.
I’m eagerly looking forward to seeing if the entire game remains compelling when it launches on September 5, 2025. Can’t wait for Terminator 2D: No Fate on PS5 and PS4! Share your thoughts in the comment section beneath.
