As a long-time fan of horror movies, I’ve seen my fair share of gruesome scenes and jump scares. But none have left me as unsettled and intrigued as the Terrifier franchise. The latest installment, Terrifier 3, has once again proven that it’s not just about the gore, but also about the story and the characters.
**WARNING: Contains spoilers for Terrifier 3**
Typically, for a new movie, substantial box office success is required before discussions about a sequel become serious. However, this rule doesn’t apply to the Terrifier series, as it has already garnered enough interest to warrant sequels.
The sequels in the series have consistently expanded, not just in terms of financial investment but also box office earnings as well. In fact, plans for a fourth installment were set in motion even before Terrifier 3 hit theaters.
It seems quite reasonable, considering the movie appears set to deliver another strong showing at the box office.
The grisly and sensational aspects have significantly contributed to the series’ success so far, as evidenced by widespread tales of viewers fainting or vomiting in movie theaters.
In keeping with tradition, the holiday-themed newest release finds Art adopting a grisly interpretation of festive cheer yet again.
However, let’s discuss the movie’s conclusion. How is Art left at the end and how does this pave the way for the already announced Terrifier 4?
Continue reading as you’ll find all the necessary information ahead, but be mindful that there will be a rapid succession of potential plot reveals, or what we commonly refer to as “revealed secrets” or “plot twists.
Terrifier 3 ending explained – How it sets up a sequel
In the movie, Art the Clown, portrayed by David Howard Thornton, along with his accomplice Vicky (Samantha Scaffidi), embark on one of their deadliest rampages. Unfortunate souls such as a whole family, an elderly man dressed as Santa Claus, and a large gathering of joyful kids at a mall become their victims.
In this grisly scenario, Mia and Cole, friends of Jonathan Shaw, narrowly avoid the most brutal fates. Instead, they meet their tragic ends inside a shower, in a manner that is incredibly gruesome and disturbing. It’s an unpleasant scene to contemplate.
Later, he appears before Sienna (Lauren LaVera) and Jonathan (Elliot Fullam), who are currently residing at their aunt Jessica’s home during the holidays in an attempt to heal from their past confrontation with Art. However, tranquility and relaxation prove elusive for them.
In a chilling turn of events, Sienna is bound to a chair, while Art readies himself to conclude matters. To add to their distress, Vicky unveils a gift wrapped in paper, which unfortunately contains the gruesome sight of a decapitated head, largely devoid of its skin. At first, it’s revealed that this skull once belonged to Sienna’s younger relative, Gabbie.
Subsequently, she chooses an exceptionally gruesome approach to end Jessica’s life, employing a live rodent and a deep throat wound inflicted by a blade.
Surprisingly, Gabbie suddenly shows up, and it’s unveiled that it wasn’t her head in the current scenario as Vicky discloses that it was actually Jonathan’s head all along.
However, just because Gabbie isn’t in immediate danger, it doesn’t exclude the possibility. In fact, shortly after, the child stumbles into a gaping hole in the room, seeming like a gateway to the underworld…
Nonetheless, amidst the chaos, the restrained Sienna manages to employ her unique sword to break free and seek retribution by slaying Vicky. However, before she could use it against Art, he made a swift escape and jumped onto a bus – seemingly already planning his next targets. He’s far from done…
It’s clear that Sienna and Art will encounter each other again in the future, as Sienna has vowed to rescue her cousin Gabbie who seems to be trapped in a perilous situation. So, it’s likely that a rescue attempt could lead to another encounter between these two characters.
There’s a strong chance that the upcoming sequel could bring back the character of Jonathan, who met an off-screen demise in the Terrifier series, known for its graphic portrayal of violence. The revelation that the disfigured skull is supposedly his might not be entirely trustworthy.
This could very well be a fake-out, although we’ll have to wait until the next one to find out.
He clarified that he enjoys providing details in each movie and posing additional questions to maintain viewer interest. Additionally, he acknowledged that his story is not yet complete, hence he prefers to withhold some information at this time, ensuring there are still intriguing aspects to explore further.
Instead of continuously resurrecting Art the Clown for yet another round of slaughter, rehashing the same storyline in “Terrifier” time and again, seems monotonous and unappealing to me.
“Like I said, I’m more interested in the story and the characters now more than the kill scenes.
I’m deeply intrigued by a larger narrative unfolding, and Sienna’s heroic journey within it captivates me significantly. To be precise, I find her character particularly compelling, almost equally so to Art the Clown in the story. It’s not that I care more about her than him, but her role is just as significant.
It appears that concluding Terrifier 4 isn’t likely at this point in time, even though director Damien Leone has outlined an ending for the series.
He stated, ‘I’ve got the conclusion figured out, but it’s about how many elements can I add before reaching that point? How far do I wish to prolong this – not in a bad sense.’ He continued, ‘Given the multitude of ideas I have, I’m constantly coming up with new ones. I’ll have folders filled with concepts for killing scenes or scenarios where Art the Clown could appear, either provoking hilarity or sheer terror.’
Then comes the question, “How much can I include in this film without losing the main narrative and tracking Sienna’s path?” Frankly, it’s a bit perplexing.
As a cinephile, I believe I’ve only got one or two more Terrifier films left in me, and I’m confident we’ve crafted a full, satisfying franchise. The fear is that we’ll hit diminishing returns, producing these movies solely for the sake of production without any fresh ideas to share – a scenario that could tarnish all our efforts.
If the quality of these films continues to decline, it might be best to leave at the peak, should that be an option.
In case you’re looking for a horror flick, “Terrifier 3” is currently screening in U.K. theaters. If you haven’t seen the earlier installments, you can catch them on Amazon Prime Video and Paramount Plus.
