Terrifying ‘The X-Files’ Episode Became More Haunting After Release

As a huge fan of The X-Files, I remember being so excited when the spin-off, The Lone Gunmen, finally arrived in 2001. It just made sense to focus on those quirky conspiracy theorists – Melvin, John, and Richard – who started as helpful contacts for Mulder and quickly became fan favorites. The show was created by Chris Carter, the mastermind behind The X-Files, along with some other key writers like Vince Gilligan, John Shiban, and Frank Spotnitz. The pilot episode was a really gripping story about the guys trying to stop a terrorist attack. It’s honestly eerie looking back now, because the plot mirrored a real-life attack that happened just six months after the episode aired. It was a truly unsettling coincidence.

The Pilot Episode of ‘The Lone Gunmen’ Eerily Predicted 9/11

The first episode of The Lone Gunmen, titled “Pilot,” premiered on March 4, 2001. Frohike, Byers, and Langly, previously seen as supporting characters on The X-Files, now took center stage. This initial episode introduced the series’ main storyline and new characters, including Yves Harlow, played by Zuleikha Robinson. The story begins with the trio investigating the death of Byers’ father, a government agent whose death seems suspicious. True to their nature as conspiracy theorists, The Lone Gunmen dig deeper and uncover a secret operation by rogue government agents. They discover a plan to stage a terrorist attack – specifically, hijacking a plane and crashing it into the World Trade Center in New York City – in order to justify going to war.

The story is unsettling, and the episode vividly portrays the frightening events. As the team tries to prevent a disaster, Langly and Frohike uncover the plane’s destination by examining its flight plan. Byers manages to board the aircraft, discovering it’s being hijacked remotely and deliberately flown towards the World Trade Center. The episode dramatically shows the Boeing 727 speeding towards the illuminated skyscrapers. Fortunately, thanks to Langly, Frohike, and assistance from Yves, they’re able to restore control to the pilots at the last moment.

Once the pilots recovered, they lifted the plane, bringing it dangerously close to the buildings. The tension peaked as the aircraft grazed the top of one of the towers, avoiding a collision by mere inches. Everyone on board was safe, and the building remained undamaged. This thrilling and visually impressive start to The Lone Gunmen immediately captivated X-Files fans and promised a compelling new series.
