Josh Brolin, who famously played Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has suggested he might return to the role. Marvel Studios may have already given fans a clue about when this could happen. Brolin played the villain Thanos from 2014 to 2019, becoming the main antagonist throughout the Infinity Saga. Thanos was ultimately defeated and killed in Avengers: Endgame by Iron Man and the other Avengers, stopping his plan to bring balance to the universe.
Even though his character died in the superhero series, fans are still hoping Josh Brolin might reprise his role as the famous comic book villain. Brolin has said he’d be willing to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe if given the chance, telling Entertainment Tonight he’s open to it.
Josh Brolin, who played Thanos, said he’d consider reprising the role if Joe Russo, a director of Avengers: Doomsday, asked him to – which Russo might do.
If Joe Russo approaches me with an idea – and he might have already – I’d likely agree to it, and probably quite soon.
This news follows a recent hint from Marvel Studios about Thanos potentially returning in the next Avengers movie, currently titled Doomsday. Earlier in September, a promotional hologram for the new Avengers film showed a famous scene from the comics featuring Thanos and Doctor Doom, the main villain of Doomsday.
Many fans believe Josh Brolin might reprise his role as Thanos in the 2026 Marvel team-up movie. Some speculate Thanos could be defeated by Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, establishing Doom as the new, powerful villain of the MCU.
The next Marvel Studios film, Avengers: Doomsday, is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who also directed Avengers: Endgame, the movie will feature heroes from across multiple universes joining forces to battle Victor Doom, also known as Doctor Doom.
Okay, so it’s not official yet, but everything’s pointing to Josh Brolin being back as Thanos in the new movie! There’s a lot of evidence suggesting he’ll have some kind of role, which is really exciting as a fan!
Will Thanos Ever Return to the MCU?

Although Thanos has been gone from the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a few years, the franchise hasn’t completely moved on from him or the storyline he was a part of.
Even though Josh Brolin’s character died in Avengers: Endgame, he’s appeared in a few different Marvel shows on Disney+, including What If…? and the recent Marvel Zombies.
Because Avengers: Doomsday involves traveling to different realities, Marvel Studios could potentially bring Thanos back in the 2026 movie. Josh Brolin hinted that he’s even discussed a possible return with the film’s directors, Joe and Anthony Russo.
If he comes back next year, it will probably be just to highlight the power of the franchise’s new main villain, Doctor Doom. In the comics, there’s a famous scene where Doom completely destroys Thanos, leaving only his skeleton behind as a symbol of his victory.
Since Doctor Doom isn’t yet established as a huge threat in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, showing him easily defeat a well-known and frightening villain could be a quick way to make audiences see him as a major force.
Even if he isn’t in Doomsday, there’s still a small chance he could show up with other villains in the Avengers: Secret Wars movie planned for 2027, though that’s looking increasingly improbable.
