Here’s a quick update as of Monday, October 6th, 2025, at 10am: Digimon Story Time Stranger was a big success over the weekend!
The game continues to perform exceptionally well on the PlayStation Store, consistently ranking around eighth place among the top-selling games in the US.
The game saw a significant increase in players on Steam, reaching a peak of 84,000 concurrent players on Sunday.
The game probably won’t get any more popular, but Bandai Namco is definitely seeing a major success. We’ll likely find out how well it’s selling soon with the release of early sales numbers.
Digimon was most popular in the 1990s, and you might think it’s a bit of a niche interest now. However, the new game, Digimon Story Time Stranger, is proving that wrong – it’s become incredibly popular!
Although we’re still waiting for complete data, players have observed that the game recently reached a high of over 70,000 concurrent players on Steam.
The number of players currently playing a game doesn’t show actual sales, but a high player count usually suggests the game has sold well, as it indicates a larger player base.
In fact, if you compare to previous Digimon games, the difference is dramatic.
Take Digimon Survive, for instance – though it’s from a slightly different series – it reached a high of just over 6,000 players.
Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth – Time Stranger’s previous game only reached a peak of around 3,500 players. It’s worth noting that earlier version came to PC several years after it was first released on PlayStation.
While we don’t have exact player numbers for the PS5 version, the game is currently performing well on the US PlayStation Store. It’s seventh on the list of digital bestsellers, following popular titles like Ghost of Yotei, Fortnite, NBA 2K26, and Madden NFL 26. Surprisingly, it’s even outselling Roblox and Battlefield 6!
If the game is performing well, Bandai Namco will likely share sales figures soon.
It’s a shame, then, that the game didn’t quite hit our reviewer’s expectations.
In our 6/10 verdict, we said the game “squanders so much potential”:
Honestly, Digimon Story Time Stranger had the potential to be one of the best Digimon RPGs ever. The core systems were really solid! But it ended up being way too restrictive. Everything felt linear, which really held back the battles and how my Digimon team developed. It’s frustrating because you can tell how much potential was there, but the game just doesn’t quite deliver. It feels like a missed opportunity, sadly.
