Did you enjoy the reveal trailer for Loulan: The Cursed Sand that was released today? You weren’t alone – millions of others did too!
Given the developers involved – veterans from studios like Sony Santa Monica, FromSoftware, and PlatinumGames – it’s not a shock to see such a polished release.
Here’s what Game Director Hongwen Huai said on the PS Blog:
We’re a team of experienced gamers who grew up with action games in the ’80s and ’90s, influenced by titles like the original God of War and classic arcade games. We’ve worked on action games at top studios in the US and Japan – including Santa Monica Studio, FromSoftware, and PlatinumGames – and are committed to creating innovative experiences in the genre we love.
Having worked as a gameplay programmer on both God of War and God of War Ragnarok, Huai has a deep understanding of what makes character action games excellent.
The game itself sounds absolutely fascinating, exploring the lost kingdom of Loulan.
You’ll play as the Cursed Sand, a warrior made of both bone and sand, and you can switch between these two forms at will.
Sony is backing the game with its China Hero Project, and it looks like they’ve found a promising title.
Huai concluded:
This project lets players explore the mysterious, ancient city of Loulan with a classic, overhead view, similar to old arcade games. We’re combining fast-paced combat with new gameplay features, like a special connection between the main character and their sandblade. We hope players will have a lot of fun discovering this world.
There’s no release date attached to this one just yet, but surely it’s one to watch.
