In the Disney+ series Ironheart, viewers encountered some unexpected characters who are typically associated with shows like Agatha All Along or the Doctor Strange movie franchise. While Ironheart focuses on technology, the show introduced characters that one might not anticipate meeting in these contexts, such as Mephisto and the unforeseen character of Zelma Stanton, a young magic user. The twist was the introduction of Zelma, who, in Marvel Comics, is one of the founders and teachers at Doctor Strange’s Strange Academy. Zelma made her debut in Doctor Strange Vol. 4 #1 in 2015 when Strange cured her of “mind maggots” and hired her as his librarian. She soon gained magical powers after saving Strange’s life, becoming a powerful sorcerer since then.
In 2020, the unusual school known as Strange Academy was launched, with Zelma Stanton bringing in a new student, Emily Bright, who possessed magical abilities. Upon her arrival, Emily encountered various intriguing individuals, such as Asgardians, Frost Giants, zombies, fairies, and even the offspring of Dormammu’s demon, all being treated equally to aid them in mastering their individual mystical skills.
10) Shaylee Moonpeddle
It appears that Shaylee Moonpeddle is not typically portrayed as a powerhouse at Strange Academy. Instead, she stands out for her cheerful disposition and her close bonds with the socially awkward Guslaug, the Frost Giant, and romantic interest Toth. She was one of the initial students to form a friendship with Emily Bright, whose perspective initially introduced readers to this new world in the first volume of “Strange Academy”. Shaylee is a half-fairy, born to a fairy queen from Otherworld, but she grew up without her human father due to the Fairy Council’s rules. Despite being a hybrid, her magical abilities are not as strong as those of her fellow students at the academy.
9) Calvin Morse
Calvin Morse, once a misfit child who grew up in various foster homes, now resides as a student at Strange Academy. Despite his young age and social awkwardness, he never felt a sense of belonging anywhere, even in his most recent foster home where conditions were so dire that he reacted violently towards his caretakers upon discovering a seemingly ordinary leather jacket in his closet. It was only when Calvin discovered his magical abilities at Strange Academy that he found a place to call his own, but this newfound acceptance came with a heart-wrenching revelation – the jacket was none other than Mister Misery disguised as an everyday item, bestowing upon Calvin powers. This unfortunate incident led to his expulsion from the academy and left him homeless, where he eventually found employment under the villain Gaslamp. Now, Calvin possesses magical abilities, primarily in the form of force attacks, but these powers pale in comparison to those of his fellow students at Strange Academy.
8) Toth
Toth’s parents are exceptionally powerful figures at Strange Academy. His mother, Queen Blythir, is a Crystal Warrior, while his father is the Man-Thing. He possesses his mother’s crystal warrior form and can unleash an energy blast from his mouth. This ability might be due to his father’s inheritance. Toth has the unique trait of being able to regenerate if he’s destroyed, as long as his heart remains intact. However, Mister Misery once shattered him. Despite the unknown limits of his powers, Doctor Doom extended an invitation for him to join Doom Academy.
7) Pia
In the debut issue of “Strange Academy: Blood Hunt,” we meet a fresh student named Pia. As the title implies, this story unfolds during the Marvel-wide crossover event, “Blood Hunt,” where vampires were terrorizing the globe. Doctor Strange had a strategy to cast a spell from the Darkhold that would eradicate all vampires, but Doctor Voodoo was opposed to it. Pia joined the academy for a specific reason – she is a vampire herself, though she kept this secret from her fellow students and teachers except Doctor Voodoo. She has vampire abilities such as increased strength and speed, and she has a guardian named Tito Peping who shields her from sunlight. The full extent of her powers remains undisclosed, as she hasn’t been seen since the conclusion of this series.
6) Alvi Brorson
Iric and Alvi Brorson hail from Asgard, a realm known for its powerful inhabitants. Their parents are Bror, a palace guard, and The Enchantress, one of Asgard’s mightiest sorceresses. These brothers share the extraordinary traits typical of Asgardians – superhuman strength, durability, and additional abilities. Moreover, they inherited magical prowess from their mother. Alvi was more scholarly, always eager to learn, while Iric was more playful and often neglected his studies. Despite being Asgardians, neither is invincible. Sadly, Iric met his end in the sixth issue of Strange Academy: Finals, choosing to sacrifice himself to protect Doyle Dormammu from an attack by Emily Bright.
5) Germán Aguilar
German Aguilar demonstrated throughout the Strange Academy series that he was an incredibly potent sorcerer, yet didn’t receive as much focus in the stories compared to his fellow students. At a tender age of four or five, German began developing his magical abilities, including the ability to enter the animage state, which allows him to generate animal manifestations. One vulnerability he possesses is a fear of vampires, which caused complications when the pupils encountered them in Blood Hunt. However, he conquered this dread once he grew close to Tia and discovered she was a vampire. Although German didn’t receive as much attention as others, Doctor Doom recognized his potential and offered him a spot at Doom Academy following Strange Academy’s closure.
4) Zoe Laveau
Among the select few students at Strange Academy, Zoe Laveau is one of the rare individuals hailing from New Orleans, the city where the institution is based. She was among the initial group to forge a bond with Emily Bright and eventually developed a close friendship. However, it appears that her primary abilities were disguised, as she kept her true identity hidden not just from others, but even from her friends. In reality, Zoe is a zombie, but with a magical amulet, she can assume a human form. Her powers stem from ominous origins, as she entered into agreements with Gaslamp, which ultimately resulted in her demise and subsequent resurrection at the hands of her parents. Returning as a zombie, Zoe now wields the power of necromancy, allowing her to command the undead. This capability can prove advantageous, as she can summon other zombies to join her in combat.
3) Dessy
As a fervent admirer, I’d say it’s no secret that Dessy, who sometimes tried to pass as an ordinary child, had an unsettling aura. Known to the world as Despair, she’s the offspring of the legendary demon S’ym, a formidable adversary of the X-Men hailing from Limbo. In the initial volume of Strange Academy, she appeared as a seemingly benevolent girl, frequently testing boundaries. However, when Emily Bright decided to challenge the system and departed from the academy, taking several students along, Dessy stepped into her inner circle. At this juncture, she transformed into a truly terrifying figure, displaying an intimidating power that could potentially harm any of her former peers who dared cross their path. Her unique ability lies in inducing despair within those around her, leaving them mentally shattered. It was only the unwavering affection of Zoe that managed to halt her destructive rampage in Strange Academy: Finals.
2) Emily Bright
In a sense, Emily Bright is the strongest among the Strange Academy students initially, but ultimately there was another student with greater power. Readers first encounter the world of Strange Academy through Emily Bright, a novelty as she’s a human-born student who demonstrates magical abilities. In the early volumes, Emily delves deeper into her powers, yet harbors suspicions about the faculty keeping secrets from them all. This suspicion led to rebellion and eventual departure from the school, taking other students with her. Later, she formed an alliance with Dormammu to assault the academy, under the guise of protecting her fellow students. However, Emily’s power was immense – she could read minds, heal, see into other realms, multiply creatures, resurrect the dead, manipulate objects, and wield chaos magic. If not for the existence of a student stronger than her, Emily may have brought destruction to the world.
1) Doyle Dormammu
In the world of “Strange Academy” comics, Doyle Dormammu stands out as the most formidable student. Many assumed his power would lean towards evil due to his father’s ominous reputation, but they were mistaken. You see, Doyle wasn’t actually Dormammu’s son; his mother was human. However, a brain tumor forced a deal between his mother and Dormammu, where the boy received a portion of Dormammu’s essence. This transformation made him who he is today.
In the initial volume, Doyle demonstrated extraordinary heroism when he saved Emily Bright’s life. He even gave her a ring infused with some of his essence to keep her alive and empowered. When Emily sought to destroy Strange Academy in her self-proclaimed mission to protect students, Doyle clarified that he had the ability to halt her actions all along, but chose not to intervene because he believed she could save herself. Unfortunately, she couldn’t, and Doyle demonstrated his might by reclaiming his power from her and banishing her.
Doyle Dormammu possesses pyrokinesis and sorcery, and when he bested Emily Bright, it solidified his position as the strongest student at Strange Academy.
