Beyond the Gauntlet, he’s controlled incredibly powerful objects like the Cosmic Cube and even a device capable of destroying the creator of the entire multiverse. First appearing in 1973, Thanos isn’t defined by a single power level; his abilities and the sources of his power have varied greatly throughout different stories. While the Infinity Gauntlet and Cosmic Cube are well-known, lesser-known artifacts like the Astral Regulator and his connection to the Cancerverse demonstrate just how formidable Thanos truly is.

Whether it’s his iconic snap that eliminated half of all life, or appearances in stories outside the main Marvel Universe like The End, here’s a ranking of the most powerful versions of Thanos.

10) Cosmic Cube Thanos

This version of Thanos first appeared shortly after his introduction in the Captain Marvel series (issues #25-34, 1973-1974), created by Mike Friedrich and Jim Starlin. It marks Thanos’s initial large-scale attempt to control the universe. He searches for the Cosmic Cube, a powerful object that allows him to change reality and enforce his desires. With the Cube, Thanos captures and defeats Captain Marvel, Iron Man, Drax the Destroyer, and Moondragon, manipulating events to suit his plans. 8) Annihilation Thanos

This version of Thanos appears in the 2006-2007 “Annihilation” storyline. In this event, the primary villain, Annihilus, invades our universe, and Thanos surprisingly teams up with him, lending his intelligence to Annihilus’s attacks. Together, they capture Galactus and Silver Surfer. Thanos then designs the technology that transforms Galactus into a powerful weapon, using his cosmic energy to endanger the entire multiverse. Eventually, Thanos betrays Annihilus by releasing Moondragon, but Drax the Destroyer kills him, bringing his role in the story to an end and completing his life’s purpose.

7) Infinity Crusade Thanos

Published in 1993, The Infinity Crusade is the third installment in Jim Starlin and Ron Lim’s Infinity trilogy. In this story, Thanos surprisingly teams up with Earth’s heroes. The Goddess collects thirty Cosmic Cubes, combining them into a Cosmic Egg that can grant wishes, and uses it to control the heroes. Though she initially sees Thanos as a threat, Adam Warlock rescues him, leading to an uneasy partnership. This storyline is unique because it showcases Thanos’s strength and intelligence without relying on any external power boosts – his tactical skills are enough to challenge a nearly all-powerful foe.

6) Thanos Imperative

Written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, The Thanos Imperative (2010) takes place in the Cancerverse, an alternate reality where Death no longer exists. This causes life to grow uncontrollably, spreading into our universe through a dimensional tear called the Fault. Thanos plays a crucial role because he is the embodiment of Death, making him the only thing capable of destroying the Cancerverse. He confronts Lord Mar-Vell, the Cancerverse’s embodiment of Life, and ultimately allows Death to consume Mar-Vell, causing the Cancerverse to collapse. While incredibly powerful – possessing the ability to end reality – this version of Thanos relies more on abstract concepts than sheer force, making him different from other interpretations.

Published in 1990, The Thanos Quest is a two-part story by Jim Starlin and Ron Lim that directly sets up the events of The Infinity Gauntlet. In the 2003 six-issue comic series Marvel Universe: The End, created by Jim Starlin and Al Milgrom, Thanos wields the Heart of the Universe – a powerful energy source that forms the foundation of all existence.
