The 10 Worst Things Teen Titans Members Have Ever Done

The Teen Titans originally started as a group of young sidekicks to DC Comics’ famous superheroes. But in 1980, a new version of the team, created by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, became incredibly popular. Since then, the Titans have seen many different lineups and even disappeared briefly when another team, Young Justice, gained prominence. However, they always returned, often even stronger. Although many Titans members are well-known heroes, they haven’t always made the right choices, and some have committed questionable acts over the years.

DC Comics’ Teen Titans have faced many challenges, and sometimes, they’ve made truly awful choices. Here’s a rundown of the ten worst things the team has ever done, from betrayals and shocking turns to accidents and actions taken under pressure.

10) Kon-El Betrayed the Titans with Lex Luthor

Kon-El, also known as Superboy, is a clone created using the genetic material of both Superman and Lex Luthor. Initially, the Luthor side of his DNA was suppressed through hidden programming. He first fought alongside Young Justice and later joined the Teen Titans. However, during a storyline in 2005 called “The Insiders,” Lex Luthor activated the programming, turning Superboy into a weapon he could control. While under Luthor’s control, Superboy violently attacked and defeated the Teen Titans. Wonder Girl’s love was eventually able to break the mind control, but the experience left Superboy deeply troubled and filled with guilt, leading him to leave the team and isolate himself at the Kent farm.

9) Nightwing Became Ric Grayson

Nightwing is known as one of DC Comics’ most sincere and dedicated heroes. Everything changed when he was shot in the head by KGBeast as part of a scheme by Bane to get to Batman. Though he survived, Dick Grayson lost his memory, forcing him to give up being Nightwing. He reinvented himself as Ric Grayson, a harsher and more distant person who cut ties with his former friends, the Titans. This caused significant pain and alienation for people like Barbara Gordon, Tim Drake, and Jason Todd. Things got even worse when the Joker brainwashed him and turned him into a temporary villain during the “Joker War.”

8) Blue Beetle Was Controlled by the Reach

Jaime Reyes is a member of the Teen Titans connected to a powerful alien artifact called the Blue Beetle scarab. Unbeknownst to him, this scarab was sent to Earth by a hostile alien race called the Reach as a first step in preparing for an invasion. Though the scarab was damaged, giving Jaime some control, the Reach eventually regained command and turned him into a puppet, forcing him to act as their enforcer. This heartbreaking betrayal led to a difficult battle for the Teen Titans, who had to fight their friend and former teammate to both save him from the Reach’s control and prevent the destruction of Earth.

7) Robin (Damian Wayne) Created the Secret Prison

As a big fan of the Teen Titans, I was really surprised by what happened in the 2016 reboot! Damian Wayne, trying to be a hero, secretly rebuilt the team and turned their base, Mercy Hall, into a hidden prison. He started capturing supervillains – guys like Brother Blood, Atomic Skull, and even Black Mask – and holding them without any trial or anyone knowing about it. He was essentially taking the law into his own hands and even covered his tracks from Batman! It all came crashing down when Deathstroke helped Kid Flash discover the prison, and it completely broke the trust between Damian and the rest of the Titans. It was a really interesting, but dark, turn for the team.

6) Donna Troy Was an Amazon Assassin in the New 52

The New 52 storyline significantly altered Donna Troy’s character, making her almost unrecognisable. Similar to a revised origin story for Wonder Woman, this version depicted Donna as being created from clay by the sorceress Derinoe, specifically designed to defeat Wonder Woman. She rose to power as the self-proclaimed Queen of Themyscira after the Amazons believed Wonder Woman had deserted them, becoming a villain responsible for mass murder and attempting genocide. Fortunately, the DC Rebirth storyline corrected this portrayal, allowing Donna to return to her role as the heroic character familiar to Teen Titans fans.

5) Raven Allied With the Demon Neron

I’ve always been captivated by Raven’s internal struggle. It’s heartbreaking knowing her father is this incredibly powerful, evil demon intent on conquering everything, even our world. But she fights it, always choosing to be a hero and a vital part of the Teen Titans. It was terrifying to see a future version of her fall, becoming this villain called the Unkindness in the ‘Future State’ storyline. She absorbed the power of the Four Horsemen and shockingly allied herself with Neron! She even manipulated Shazam and, unbelievably, used him to kill the Spectre and steal his immense power. It’s just an alternate timeline, but that corrupted Raven is easily one of the Teen Titans’ most formidable and frightening foes.

4) Wally West in Heroes in Crisis

“Heroes in Crisis” is a very controversial DC Comics series known for its shocking plot. The story centers around a murder investigation at the Sanctuary, a safe haven for heroes dealing with emotional trauma. When Wally West, a key member of the Teen Titans, is found dead, suspicion falls on characters like Booster Gold and Harley Quinn. The biggest source of fan outrage was the reveal that Wally West himself was the killer – a version of Wally from an alternate timeline. While intended to explore themes of trauma and mental breakdown, the story was heavily criticized due to its handling of such a popular and beloved character.

3) Beast Boy in the Beast World Storyline

For years, Beast Boy has been known as one of the Teen Titans’ most cheerful and innocent heroes, both in the comics and the animated series. This is remarkable considering his difficult childhood, where he faced bullying and isolation because of his green skin. However, in the ‘Titans: Beast World’ storyline, he made a drastic change, agreeing to transform into a planet-conquering Starro-form he called Garro. When Doctor Hate erased his memories during the transformation, he became a massive, uncontrolled monster and began taking over the Earth. This event allowed Amanda Waller to turn public opinion against superheroes, leading her to target the Teen Titans.

2) Starfire Killed Enemies When She Joined The Teen Titans

When Starfire first appeared in The New Teen Titans, she was a princess who had been held captive and whose sister had seized control of their home planet. Growing up as an alien warrior, she was trained to fight for survival – to kill or be killed. This made her a challenging addition to the Teen Titans, as she was prepared to use lethal force, something the team avoided. Because of Dick Grayson’s belief in not killing, the Titans had to help her learn to subdue enemies without using deadly force, a difficult adjustment for her. The New Teen Titans specifically highlighted the struggle a warrior hero faces when trying to stop killing.

1) Terra Betrayed the Teen Titans

The storyline “The Judas Contract” features the most well-known betrayal in Teen Titans history. Terra, a new member of the team with the power to control earth, was secretly working for Deathstroke all along. Tara Markov, also known as Terra and a princess from Markovia, joined the Teen Titans to feed Deathstroke information about their plans, ultimately leading to the team’s capture and their most crushing defeat. Her deception proved to be a devastating blow to the Titans.
