Ties are very uncommon at the Academy Awards, but one occurred during Sunday night’s show. This is only the third time in the Oscars’ history that a tie has been declared.
A tie occurred at the Academy Awards on Sunday night in the Best Live Action Short Film category. Kumail Nanjiani announced that both The Singers, by Sam A. Davis and Jack Piatt, and Two People Exchanging Saliva, by Alexandre Singh and Natalie Musteata, had won the Oscar. Each team then gave an acceptance speech after their win was announced.
For only the seventh time in nearly a century of the Academy Awards, there was a tie. Previous ties happened in 1932 for Best Actor (Wallace Berry for The Champ and Fredric March for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde), in 1950 for Best Documentary Short Subject (A Chance to Live and So Much for So Little), in 1969 for Best Actress (Katharine Hepburn for The Lion in Winter and Barbra Streisand for Funny Girl), in 1987 for Best Documentary Features (Artie Shaw: Time Is All You’ve Got and Down and Out in America), in 1995 for Best Live Action Short Film (Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life and Trevor), and in 2013 for Best Sound Editing (Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty).
